It used to be a given that Florida would have a great defense, but that changed the last couple of seasons under former defensive coordinator Todd Grantham. New Gators defensive coordinator, Patric Toney, says the turnaround for Florida’s defense starts with the fundamentals.

Well, the news hasn’t gotten much better since our last newsletter.

Some may wonder why the moves to fire defensive coordinator, Todd Grantham, and offensive line coach, John Hevesy, weren’t made sooner by Florida head coach Dan Mullen. After Florida’s performance vs South Carolina, the luxury of waiting until season’s end was no longer there.

One day after Florida suffers their fifth loss of the season, Bruce Feldman (The Athletic) reports Florida is firing defensive coordinator Todd Grantham and offensive line coach John Hevesy.

After losing at South Carolina, the Gators’ third straight defeat, there are reports that two longtime assistants to Dan Mullen are being let go.

Florida’s defense was historically bad last season, so dreadful at times that fans were clamoring to fire everyone.

If Florida’s defense is going to rebound from a disappointing 2020 season, the group will have to come together much better than they did last season.

It’s been said many times that Florida’s defense can’t be any worse in 2021 compared to the 2020 defense. On the surface, Florida’s defense in 2018 and 2019 were nice starts under defensive coordinator Todd Grantham. Then, 2020 came and Florida’s defense held the team back from achieving a CFP push.

There’s very little job pressure on Dan Mullen heading in to the 2021 season. Even after the disappointing end of the 2020 season, Mullen has accomplished about all that’s been asked of him. With those accomplishments, Mullen received a three-year contract extension. However, there are “pressure points” for this coming season that could lead to more pressure or set up the future.
