Annual climate report shows 2020 as the warmest year on record for Jacksonville
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ The climate report from the National Weather Service in Jacksonville states that 2020 was the warmest and most humid year on record. These weather conditions are compared to temperature records that go back to 1974 and rainfall records back to 1998. The average temperature in 2020 was 71.9ยฐ ( +3.0ยฐF above normal), just ahead of 71.8ยฐ back in 2015. The highest peak wind speed was 53 mph on Feb. 6, 2020. The peak wind speed of 50 mph on Dec. 24, 2020, was the highest all-time for the month of December.
JFRD: Mobile home catches on fire in the Ortega neighborhood
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue says that a mobile home caught on fire near the 5200 block of Collins Road in the Ortega neighborhood. Crews rushed to the scene at around 6 a.m., and immediately started fighting flames coming out of the home. JFRD says the fire is now under control. No injuries have been reported so far. The Red Cross is currently helping one individual who was displaced by the incident.
Womanโs body washes up near riverfront home in Ortega
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ A body washed up near the backyard of a riverfront home in the Ortega neighborhood Thursday evening. Police and firefighters responded just before 7:30 p.m. to the back of the Ortega Boulevard home, where the body of a woman was found on rocks next to the bulkhead. The homeowner, whoโs a doctor, estimated the body to have been in the water for more than 24 hours. He said the half-clothed body appeared to be that of a woman in her late 20s to early 30s. Jacksonville Sheriffโs Office homicide detectives were called to investigate.

Donated funds will help bury boy who deputies say died of abuse
The woman who created a GoFundMe page for 5-year-old Matthew (Mateo) Ortega confirms hes the Kingsland boy who died Monday from abuse. The Camden County Sheriff's Office arrested the child's mother, Maria Miranda Alas, from El Salvador, on a charge of murder and her boyfriend for making false statements. The Sheriff's Office said Alas flagged down a deputy Monday and communicated through broken English that the boy in her lap was unconscious. The couple was escorted to Camden Medical Center. As the child's condition worsened, he was flown by air ambulance to Wolfson Children's Hospital in Jacksonville, where he died.
