Storms linger in SE GA before coming south to NE FL

Severe Thunderstorm Warning for St Johns was loaded with hail and gusty winds over 58 mph on August 18, 2020. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Hundreds of severe thunderstorm warnings occur every year in the area watched by the National Weather Service office in Jacksonville. The new details will help contrast those severe storms from more destructive storms, which tend to be less common but pack a big punch. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – After a windy and cold day on Saturday, the winds calm down during evening, but that means even colder temperatures overnight. Inland areas will be under a Freeze Warning- but will most likely exclude St Johns and Flagler counties and to the east of the St Johns River in Duval county. The areas under a Freeze Warning can expect temperatures to dip into the low 30s, which could kill some plants. For this freeze, you must protect your plants, pets, and people- but it is not a hard freeze, where we should be concerned about pipes. Winds will be lighter and we are not expected to see freezing temperatures Sunday night thanks to building clouds overnight.

We’re off to another freezing start with temperatures in the mid 20s and low 30s. Sunday will be sunny and ever-so-slightly less cold, with temperatures topping out in the upper 50s low 60s. Seasonal temperatures are back on Monday, with temperature warming into the cool mid-60s for the afternoon under mostly sunny skies. Tuesday we will wake up in the low 40s and warms into the mid-60s.

There will still be freezing temperatures in the normally cold locations just west of Jacksonville to inland Southeastern Georgia. Thursday starts off chilly with inland frost, but warms up into the upper 60s, hitting 70° for an afternoon high. Expect increasing clouds in the afternoon skies and light winds. Saturday we may wake up damp, but the cold front behind the showers pushes through, clearing our skies and cooling us down. We will hit the mid 60s under partly sunny skies.

Thursday starts off chilly with inland frost, but warms up into the upper 60s, hitting 70° for an afternoon high. Expect mostly sunny skies and light winds. We will hit the upper 60s under mostly sunny skies. Sunday is a tad cooler, waking up in the mid 40s and warming up into the low 60s under mostly cloudy skies. Monday and Tuesday look sunny and cool, only topping out in the low 60s.

Look for increasing cloud cover today with light rain showers this evening primarily from Jacksonville and points south. Overnight heavier rain with possible thunderstorms target Flagler and St Johns counties overnight into Sunday morning. Breezy NE winds today could gust over 25 this afternoon resulting in a high risk for rip currents. Highs today reach the mid/upper 70s, with overnight low temperatures will be in the lower 60s. Cloudy skies, breezy and damp conditions last most of the day.

We did see increasing clouds from the south throughout the afternoon and those clouds may obscure any view we might have had of tonight’s launch. ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. Parents have until the end of the day to decide how theyd their child to attend school this fall. The decision comes as St Johns and several other local school districts consider pushing back the start of the school year. St. Johns County schools have four choices for students:SJC Schools Superintendent Tim Forson said he knows parents are faced with a difficult choice. The next school board meeting is on July 28. The northeasterly winds will drive a higher volume of water against our coastline, making for minor coastal and river flooding during times of high tide. Expect breezy northeasterly winds between 10-15 mph. Minor river flooding will be an increasing concern during high tide with the consistent northeasterly winds. Expect afternoon highs in the upper 80s.

Actual temperatures will climb into the mid to upper 90s and feels like temperatures, or when you consider the temperatures and the humidity, will top out between 104-112. A Heat Advisory has been issued for Duval, Clay, St Johns, Nassau, Camden, Glynn and Brantley counties from noon until 6 p.m.A Heat Advisory is issued when the combination of hot temperatures and high humidities creates heat indices of 108 degrees or higher. The heat index is a measure of how hot it feels when the effect of humidity combines with the temperature. High heat index values can create dangerously hot conditions where individuals may become critically exhausted if outdoors.
