United Way of Northeast Florida, the Kids Hope Alliance and Duval County Public Schools announced Thursday a $5.5 million dollar grant for access to free mental health resources for Duval County students.

JEA has disbursed more than $1.5 million in utility assistance to residents in Northeast Florida, and the utility has additional funds available to help families in need.

Months after the city of Jacksonville received $29 million to help Duval County tenants pay rent and utilities amid the COVID-19 pandemic, thousands are still waiting for their applications to be processed and approved.

With an estimated 20 U.S. military veterans taking their lives every day, a Jacksonville-based group hopes to make that troubling trend a thing of the past, and they’re challenging you to get involved.

The rental assistance program is a partnership between the city, the United Way and JEA. Applications close on April 9 at 6 p.m., so there’s a time period where people do need to apply,” Braun emphasized. Even though there is a significant amount of money available in this program -- $29 million -- Braun said there is the possibility that the money could run out. Be unable to access other payment assistance for the same costs (ex: If rent assistance was received from another program for March – May, this program may not be used to pay for rent during that timeframe; however, it could cover other months). You can ONLY apply for the program if your name is on the lease, and this information will be verified with the property owner or landlord.

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – More families are in need because of the coronavirus pandemic. United Way of St. Johns County wants to help but needs donations for its Empty Stocking Fund. How do I feed them a Christmas dinner’?”Nelson says United Way of St. Johns County typically receives requests for assistance from people in the more centrally based neighborhoods of St. Augustine. “That is a startling statistic.”Nelson says the Empty Stock Fund helped 505 St. Johns County families last year. “But it’s a 14-year-old that is hungry.”To donate quickly, go to United Way of St. Johns County’s website.

The local groups are teaming up to provide food to low-income seniors struggling to make ends meet. The groups deliver food directly to 150 seniors living in low-income apartments. Brignoni is now enrolled in a new pilot program that delivers about 20 pounds of food every Wednesday to seniors living in low-income apartments through DoorDash. Individuals in need or who are looking for information for someone else can call United Way 211 from a cell phone or landline by dialing 2-1-1 or 904-632-0600. This pilot program will provide more than one thousand deliveries to seniors over 6 weeks – totaling more than 21,500 pounds of food.

COLUMBIA COUNTY, Fla. The Columbia County Board of County Commissioners approved $2 million to aid Columbia County residents that are experiencing financial hardship due to COVID-19. The program is managed in partnership with the United Way of Suwannee Valley and Catholic Charities of Lake City. A few tips to apply for CARES assistance:Ensure your residence address is located in Columbia County. Complete the online application in its entirety. A case manager from United Way or Catholic Charities will contact applicants once the submission is processed.

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. Two nonprofits in St. Johns County are teaming up to collect back-to-school donations on Saturday. and St. Johns County United Way will hold a drive-up and drop-off event at Fruit Cove Middle School, 3180 Race Track Road. The organizations are collecting non-perishable food items and school supplies, including flash drives, crayons and disinfectant wipes. All donations will benefit St. Johns County residents. Ron DeSantis extended until Sept. 1 an executive order to help prevent foreclosures and evictions amid job losses and financial problems caused by the novel coronavirus pandemic. “Nothing in this executive order shall be construed as relieving an individual from his or her obligation to make mortgage payments or rent payments,” the order said. Due to a lack of payments, Lev estimates he’s $20,000 in the hole. Even groups like United Way, which support the eviction moratorium, agree more needs to be done to help landlords. DeSantis has issued other orders in recent months that have allowed such remote meetings of county commissions, city councils, school boards and other local agencies.

PONTE VEDRA, Fla. St. Johns County in partnership with United Way of St. Johns County is holding a food drive today at the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall and it is asking for the communitys help. This is in response to the increased demand and urgent need because of COVID-19. It is not a food give-away. Its a drive-thru food drive to help restock critically-low local food pantries. United Way and St. Johns County volunteers will be on-site in the parking lots collecting requested donations taken directly from vehicles while maintaining proper social distancing guidelines.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - United Way of Northeast Florida announced Friday the launch of Mission United, a community network connecting veterans and their families to critical health, human and social services through case management. Thanks to Mission United's founding investors, United Way expects Mission United to be fully operational by Spring 2020 in Northeast Florida, serving nine counties. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jaguars first-team All-Pro and four-time Pro Bowl defensive end Calais Campbell and his foundation announced his new charitable initiative for the 2019-20 NFL season. Campbell's Season of Giving, a fundraising campaign based off of his performance on the field, adds an opportunity for fans to play along. A different charity will be highlighted each month, with each charity receiving funds from the donations made by Campbell and fans for four games. I wanted to use my platform to bring attention and funds to some very deserving causes both in Jacksonville and nationally, said Campbell in a release. When were on our playoff run in January, Ill be picking a social justice cause so Season of Giving can continue into the post-season.
