Bicyclists, joggers and walkers who travel along Heckscher Drive could soon have a safer way to get through a stretch where the walking and biking path currently ends.

A handyman who lived on the property of a commercial building on Heckscher Drive fell off a two-story roof late Sunday night and was found early Monday morning, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said.

A man died after he lost control while traveling on Heckscher Drive and was ejected from the vehicle on Monday afternoon.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Countless hoards of dead cannonball jellyfish are washing onshore near Heckscher Drive. Onshore winds push these blooms closer to our shoreline, and an incoming tide can pull them into the St Johns River. Cannonball jellyfish can also be immobilized or killed by cold water temperatures. Our water temperatures locally have dipped into the mid to upper 50s for the last week. Leatherback sea turtles make cannonball jellyfish a quick snack.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 16-year-old girl and two 27-year-old men were killed Monday in a weather-related crash on Heckscher Drive, just north of Huguenot Park, the Florida Highway Patrol said. According to the Highway Patrol, the Honda Civic they were in hydroplaned just before 6 p.m. and the 18-year-old driver lost control. Three were killed in a crash on Heckscher Drive near the boat ramp. FHP confirmed crash investigators are looking into whether tire tread or other faulty equipment might have contributed to the weather-related crash. Florida Highway Patrol data show troopers have worked nearly 20,000 traffic crashes in Northeast Florida since January 2019, with over 2,900 of them happening during rainy weather.

It used to be owned by the St. Regis Paper Company, which bought it from the Broward family. “It was owned by two people in the tree industry since the ’50s, and prior to that, one family owned it. The Broward family owned it for the 100 years prior to that," Holland said. It could even go back to slave labor, but it will really matter when they find additional information, some remains that may identify gravesite or identify grave markings. The Sheriff’s Office said it is working with the medical examiner and a forensic anthropologist to identify the remains, which could take months.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - An incredible act of kindness from a Jacksonville kayaker was caught on camera over the weekend. Two men fishing in the St. Johns River near Heckscher Drive saved a bird after they noticed it was tangled in fishing line. That's when he put his kayak in the water and saw the fishing line wrapped around its body. He was able to trap the bird, rid him of the fishing line, and set him free. After the bird was let go, the video shows the handful of fishing line that was around the bird.

JEA and Florida Power & Light have agreed to terms to decommission the St. Johns River Power Park, the large, coal-fired generating plant located off Heckscher Drive in early 2018. The plant is jointly owned by the two utilities. Retirement of the facility will result in significant annual cost savings that can be directed to debt reduction and important capital projects that will benefit JEA’s customers. JEA’s carbon footprint will be decreased by 30 percent and its nitrogen to the St. Johns River reduced as a result of plant retirement. "This agreement is important for JEA and will allow us to right-size our power generation capabilities while offering, significant environmental benefits to the community,” said JEA CEO Paul McElroy.
