Small wonders: Construction underway for 1st HabiJax tiny homes project
Construction is underway for a new housing community on Jacksonvilleโs Westside, featuring 50 tiny homes. RELATED: HabiJax to build tiny houses in LackawannaHabitat for Humanity of Jacksonville, also known as HabiJax, and the Northeast Florida Builders Association are heading this project. Other builders participating in this project include Dream Finders Homes, Dostie Homes, Encore Homes of North Florida, New Atlantic Builders, Providence Homes by Bill Cellar, Pulte Group, and TerraWise Homes. The community is made possible by a grant from the Delores Barr Weaver HabiJax Tiny House Fund at The Community Foundation for Northeast Florida. Walker said this new project is bringing attention to the affordable housing crisis in Duval County.
Jacksonville police make arrest in deadly double shooting
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ A Jacksonville man was arrested Thursday in connection with a shooting last month in the Lackawanna neighborhood that left a woman dead and a man injured. Alexander Wiggins, 35, was booked into the Duval County jail on a count of second-degree murder, two counts of attempted second-degree murder and one count of shooting deadly missiles, according to the Jacksonville Sheriffโs Office. The charges stem from an early morning shooting Nov. 17 on Maplewood Street. Police and paramedics called to the scene found a man and woman shot inside a vehicle. Detectives determined the pair were targeted in the shooting and later identified Wiggins as a person of interest in the case.
2 hurt in Lackawanna shooting, Jacksonville police say
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ Two people were injured in a shooting early Tuesday evening in the Lackawanna neighborhood, the Jacksonville Sheriffโs Office said. Police said they found an adult suffering from non-life-threatening wounds as a result of gunfire. A short time later, according to police, another adult walked into a hospital to receive treatment for non-life-threatening injuries stemming from the same incident. The Sheriffโs Office described both victims as being in their mid-20s. Police said theyโre talking to a person of interest in the case, but anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriffโs Office at 904-630-0500.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ A woman was killed and a man was injured in an early morning shooting in Lackawanna, according to the Jacksonville Sheriffโs Office. JSO responded to the scene on Maplewood Street, which is north of Edison Avenue, in response to the shooting. JSO said at least three people were gathered outside in the street when the crime occurred. During a briefing, JSO said it does not suspect there is any threat to the community. JFRD: Lackawanna house catches fire Saturday morning
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department responded to a house fire on Shortreed Street, around 7:00 a.m. Saturday Morning. Crews reported seeing heavy flames inside the home. The officers on scene declared the house clear after a search. Within minutes, JFRD announced that the blaze was under control. Command has requested a investigator to look further into the cause of the early morning fire.

Jacksonville man, 20, charged with murder in July shooting
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A 20-year-old Jacksonville man is charged with murder in the July shooting in the city's Lackawanna neighborhood that left a 31-year-old man dead and another wounded. Jail logs show he remains in custody without bond on felony charges of murder and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. According to his arrest warrant, Shingles is accused of killing Tyonne Nelson and wounding someone else in the July 26 shooting, which happened at a home near Dignan Street and Shearer Avenue. Witnesses said Shingles and Nelson were sitting on the porch when an argument broke out. They said Shingles shot Nelson seven times, gave the handgun to a neighbor and took off, the warrant stated.

The man died at the scene. According to the Sheriff's Office, they are cooperating with the investigation. Friday's shooting happened just a couple miles north of where a man was killed and a woman was wounded in a shooting Monday night. Detectives continue to investigate the shooting that happened Friday.
