DeSantis to Floridians: Dont be fooled by Isaias
Ron DeSantis cautioned Floridians to remain on guard after Isaias was downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm Saturday afternoon. Dont be fooled by the downgrade, DeSantis told reporters during a Saturday afternoon press conference at the state Emergency Operations Center. A hurricane warning was in place from Boca Raton in Palm Beach County to the Volusia-Flagler county line. The county is under a hurricane warning, a tropical storm warning, a coastal flood advisory and a high surface-wind advisory. Palm Beach County Mayor Dave Kerner acknowledged the difficulty of facing the threat from Isaias at the same time as coping with the pandemic.
Emergency order out for Floridaโs East Coast counties as Hurricane Isaias nears
Ron DeSantis issued state of emergency orders Friday for all counties on Floridaโs Atlantic coast -- from the Keys to Nassau County -- as Hurricane Isaias drenched the Bahamas and remained on a track for at least a brush with Florida. โOur sites, because theyโre outdoors with tents, if it were to get 40-, 50-mile-per-hour winds, it would just collapse,โ he said. Mayor Carlos Gimenez said the county has 20 evacuation centers on standby that could be set up with COVID-19 safety measures. โWe still donโt think there is a need to open shelters for this storm but they are ready,โ he said. Isaias had maximum sustained winds of 75 mph on Friday and it was expected to remain a hurricane through Sunday as it moves north along or just off the Florida coast according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami.

Mayor says Jacksonville is prepared to face Tropical Storm Isaias
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. With Tropical Storm Isaias predicted to bring high winds and rain to greater Jacksonville by Sunday, Mayor Lenny Curry and the citys Emergency Operations Center director discussed plans Thursday for city preparations and public safety, including how evacuations would be handled during the pandemic. We have a great plan and ready to implement that if we need to, Emergency Operations Director Steve Woodard said. Woodard added that if the storm keeps to the track the National Hurricane Center is predicting, he does not see evacuations being required for Isaias. This has been a long road, folks -- a long, long few months going back to March with COVID-19 (and) thats still with us and now hurricane season. He said they are a key part of the citys emergency plan for storms while theyre already dealing with the pandemic.

The states Emergency Operations Center is back open after being forced to close for several days for cleaning after at least a dozen people tested positive for the novel coronavirus. Now the center is also monitoring newly formed Gonzalo, which is expected to become a hurricane on Thursday. No one gets into the state emergency center without a temperature check and answering a thorough list of questions. Under the plan, one group will continue working on nothing but COVID, and a second on just hurricane planning and recovery. It has been planning how to deal with a hurricane and COVID at the same time since March.
Florida emergency officials ready for Super Bowl
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. โ Floridaโs emergency response team and state law enforcement agencies will be activated this weekend as the sporting world turns its eyes to the Super Bowl in Miami-Dade County. State Emergency Management Director Jared Moskowitz said Wednesday his agency will be at โLevel 2โ staffing in support of Homeland Security operations surrounding the game. โWe are in a supporting role and not just myself but FDLE and other state agencies,โ Moskowitz said, referring to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. The (state Emergency Operations Center) is actually going to be open and operating. Under Level 2, the Emergency Operations Center in Tallahassee will be open as well as emergency centers in Miami-Dade and Broward counties.

Dorian could deliver major hit to Florida
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Floridians, particularly those along the East Coast, are being told to prepare for a major hurricane that could hit the state during the Labor Day weekend. "All Floridians on the East Coast should have 7 days of supplies, prepare their homes & follow the track closely." Tropical-storm force winds are expected to reach Florida on Saturday, with the storm expected to make landfall late Sunday or Monday morning. Curry said no changes had been made in plans for the Florida State University-Boise State football game, which is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday at TIAA Bank Field in Jacksonville. In 2016, Hurricane Matthew caused damage as it skirted the East Coast, and Hurricane Hermine knocked out electricity in the Tallahassee area.
