Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States and doctors fear delays in screening and diagnosis may lead to more advanced stage cancers and poor outcomes. Colorectal cancer is preventable when pre-cancerous polyps are found and removed, that’s why screening is so important. AdDr. Steele said a colonoscopy is considered the ‘gold standard’ in colorectal screening, but at-home options are available too. The American Cancer Society recommends adults at average risk for colorectal cancer be screened at age 45. People at high risk, including those with a family history of polyps or colon cancer, may be due sooner.

Colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. Research shows colorectal cancer in younger adults is on the rise. Now, that data has prompted an expert panel to recommend colon cancer screening start at age 45 – instead of 50. The task force said colorectal cancer screening saves lives and that adults ages 45 to 75 should be screened to reduce risk of dying from the disease. Draft recommendations are typically posted for public comment for about a month before final guidelines are issued.

New research in the International Journal of Cancer suggests that people who exercise in the early morning might have a reduced risk of developing cancer than those who exercise later in the day. Early morning exercise might have lowered the risk for breast cancer by 25% and prostate cancer by 27%. There were several reasons cited for the results, but one strong correlation is the relationship exercise has with a person’s circadian rhythm. Night shift has been labeled as “probably” carcinogenic to humans because it disrupts a person’s natural sleep-wake cycle. Exercise can potentially improve circadian rhythms at the same time reducing cancer risk.

Cleveland Clinic acupuncturist, Jamie Starkey, did not take part in the study but said results show acupuncture may be useful for easing cancer pain. Results show these alternative therapies are associated with reduced cancer pain and decreased use of pain medications. Starkey said acupuncture dates back thousands of years and studies show the ancient practice manages pain by influencing the nervous system. If youre interested in learning more about acupuncture or acupressure to treat cancer pain, Starkey recommends talking with your oncologist first. She said its best to get a referral for an acupuncturist with experience in treating cancer pain.
