Jekyll Island is excited to report the first sea turtle nest of the 2025 nesting season, marking the earliest nest laid this year in Georgia May 1.

Following months of treatment and care, Mystic Aquarium released 22 sea turtles back to the ocean in Jekyll Island, Georgia, on Wednesday.

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. Citing public health concerns in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Jekyll Island Authority announced this week that the 2020 Shrimp & Grits Festival has been canceled for November. Canceling this years festival was not an easy decision to make, but ultimately we, the JIA, felt it was in the best interest of both participants and those who work so hard to bring the festival to life, said Jones Hooks, Executive Director of the Jekyll Island Authority. To ensure island management is properly sustained, we too have to focus our efforts on rebuilding lost revenue and not overspending. The festival is slated to return Nov. 5-7, 2021, to continue the celebration of shrimp & grits and the dishs longstanding connection to the south, organizers said. The Shrimp & Grits Festival, three times voted Best Festival in the Southeast (2012, 2017 & 2019) by the Southeast Festivals & Events Association, brings more than 45,000 people to Jekyll Island over a three-day weekend.

A swimming advisory for the St. Simons and Jekyll Island beaches has been issued, until more is known about the environmental impacts of the leaking shipwreck.

GLYNN COUNTY, Ga. - Glynn County is known for its beautiful beaches, but a new report reveals the water at some of those beaches may be unsafe for swimming. "Bacteria testing of ocean and Great Lakes beaches in every region of the country revealed days ofpotentially unsafe fecal contamination in 2018," the report says. Another beach in Glynn County on the list, which many people go to for vacations and photo shoots, was Jekyll Driftwood Beach on Jekyll Island. The health advisories were for the 5th Street Crossover Beach and South Beach at the Lighthouse, which stretch from Cedar Street to the pier on St. Simons Island, and Driftwood Beach, from beach kilometer marker 1 to Tallu Fish Lane on Jekyll Island.
