Westside apartment fire displaces 33 people

Twenty-four adults and nine children were displaced after a fire ripped through an apartment building in the Jacksonville Heights area on the Westside on Monday, the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department said.

Man found dead after shooting on Noroad

A man was found dead Saturday morning after police were called to the intersection of California Avenue and Noroad, which is east of Old Middleburg Road North in the Jacksonville Heights area.

Man, 20, arrested in shooting death of girlfriendโ€™s 14-year-old sister

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ€“ A man has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of a 14-year-old girl last month in the Jacksonville Heights area, according to the Jacksonville Sheriffโ€™s Office. According to Ifillโ€™s arrest warrant, Ifill and his ex-girlfriend got into an argument over money, and the ex-girlfriend smashed his car window. The warrant said Ifill went to get his current girlfriend and her 14-year-old sister, intending to have it out with the ex-girlfriend and her family. Ifill got the gun back from the 14-year-old, and the confrontation led to an exchange of gunfire, according to the warrant. "All of this is supporting evidence they need to make that charge.โ€On Wednesday, when News4Jax stopped by the Renault Drive South home, which still had a lot of evidence tape visible, the family declined to comment.

Police: Girl shot, killed in Jacksonville Heights was 14 years old

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. A girl who was killed in a double shooting early Saturday morning in the Jacksonville Heights area was 14 years old, according to Jacksonville Sheriffs Office records. The Sheriffs Office said the incident happened around 1:10 a.m. on Renault Drive near Hillman Drive, off 103rd Street, directly across from Jacksonville Heights Elementary. Officers said that when they arrived, they found two victims the teenage girl and a man with gunshot wounds. The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department said the girl died at the scene, despite attempts to save her life. According to News4Jax records, 383 people have been shot so far this year in Jacksonville nearing the 389 people shot in all of 2019.

Police investigating reported shooting in Jacksonville Heights

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. The Jacksonville Sheriffs Office said it is investigating a reported shooting in Jacksonville Heights. Police say the incident happened on the corner of Renault Drive and Hillman Avenue, directly across from Jacksonville Heights Elementary. News4Jax arrived at the active crime scene shortly after 5 a.m.A nearby-neighbor tells News4Jax they were woken up around 1:30 a.m. by what sounded like 15 or 20 gunshots. Police have not yet confirmed any shots were fired. We will continue to update this story as we learn more.

Girl hit by JFRD fire engine Saturday night dies

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ€“ The mother and father of a girl hit by a Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department engine on Saturday evening said the girl has died. Neighbors in the Oak Hill Park area of Jacksonville Heights captured surveillance video of the elementary-age girl hit by the fire truck as it pulled out of Station 31 on Hillman Drive. A resident told News4Jax the girl got spooked by a neighborโ€™s dog and ran out into the street in front of the fire truck. The neighbor did not want to be identified but said the truck had its lights on but no siren. JFRD Spokesperson Eric Prosswimmer said he cannot comment on the incident as it was an active Jacksonville Sheriffโ€™s Office investigation.

Foul play suspected after woman's body found in Westside apartment

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A well-being check at a Westside apartment complex led to the discovery of a woman's body, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said. Investigators said foul play is suspected in the death of the woman, who neighbors said was in her mid-70s. A K-9 unit could be seen on Shelby Lane, off Schindler Drive, about 3 miles away from the apartment complex. Derring then called 911 after she still couldn't get ahold of her friend Wednesday afternoon, leading police to discovery the woman's body inside an apartment.
