Jaguars making another change at QB, go back to Gardner Minshew

Read full article: Jaguars making another change at QB, go back to Gardner Minshew

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Doug Marrone is going back to Gardner Minshew. The Jaguars coach said on Monday that he was making another change at quarterback, going back to Minshew over veteran Mike Glennon. The Jaguars (1-12) travel to Baltimore on Sunday mired in a 12-game losing streak. Minshew finished 18 of 31 for 178 yards and a touchdown, although looked shaky in the pocket. Minshew was found to have fractures in his thumb during the bye week and Marrone stuck with Glennon even when Minshew was healthy enough to return.

Mark Brunell: Jaguars need to give Gardner Minshew another shot

Read full article: Mark Brunell: Jaguars need to give Gardner Minshew another shot

Why not think about going back to Gardner Minshew and see if he can get things moving. We’ve seen Luton. We haven’t seen Minshew since the Chargers game and he was playing with breaks in his thumb. I thought Glennon played well in last week’s 27-25 loss to the Browns. If Marrone rolls the dice once more with Glennon, and unless he shows significant improvement, the Jaguars need to go back to Minshew.

But if you consider the history between the Jaguars and Steelers, perhaps it deserves a second look. The Jaguar sand Steelers have played 26 times in history. The Jaguars famously became the first team to beat the Steelers twice in Pittsburgh in the same season during a playoff run in 2007. To beat the Steelers, the Jaguars will have to contend with a defense ranked first in sacks. That’s football and it’s all about playing the next play and sticking to our game plan.”Part of the Jaguars’ approach must center around the running game.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The good news: The Jaguars played better than they have for most of the season in Sunday’s 24-20 loss to the Packers. The bad news: The Packers played shaky football and gave the Jaguars every opportunity to win a game and they still couldn’t win. And a relatively good day for the Jaguars — by Jaguars standards, anyway — tells you where things are. Bad teams just can’t find a way to get it done. There were a lot of good things that happened on Sunday for the Jaguars.

Robert Tonyan of the Green Bay Packers reaches for a pass between Daniel Thomas (L) and Myles Jack of the Jacksonville Jaguars at Lambeau Field on November 15, 2020 in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Green Bay woke up when it needed to. But Green Bay had back-to-back sacks of Luton and nearly sacked him again on a fourth-and-26 play. That play was set up by Sidney Jones' pick of Rodgers, the Packers' second giveaway of the second half that led to Jacksonville points. Robinson rushed for 109 yards on 23 carries and Cole caught Luton’s lone touchdown pass of the game.

Wisconsin native Joe Schobert and quarterback Jake Luton will both try to defeat Aaron Rodgers, despite their feeling about the Green Bay quarterback. Schobert grew up in Wisconsin and was a big Packer’s fan as a kid. But that was the year Rodgers was hurt and Brett Hundley started at quarterback in that game. “Growing up as a Packer fan I was spoiled with Brett Favre, transitioned to Aaron Rodgers for my whole childhood watching them play. Luton says he was a fan of Favre, and then Rodgers because he like the way Rodgers played and continues to play.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – In what could be his final two months on the job, Jacksonville Jaguars coach Doug Marrone is making changes. They’re halfway home to another top-five draft pick and probably another significant reboot. Then again, since the Jaguars face the toughest schedule of anyone in the second half of the season, it might not matter. They play three divisions leaders (Green Bay, Pittsburgh, Tennessee), three second-place teams (Baltimore, Chicago, Indianapolis), plus Cleveland (5-3) and Minnesota (3-5). WHAT’S WORKINGRunning back James Robinson has four touchdowns in three games, further establishing himself as the team’s most consistent player.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – It’s still a loss, but the Jaguars didn’t play like a team that’s going in the tank on Sunday against the Texans. But I want to focus on the quarterback spot and the play from rookie quarterback Jake Luton, a sixth-round pick from Oregon State. Luton got DJ Chark back into the mix and Chark had been off the radar for weeks and out of sync with Minshew. I think that Luton, with what he showed against the Texans, certainly has earned another week of starting. I think the Jaguars should give him another chance and see what he can do.

Here were my top four takeaways from the game:A mixed day for Jake LutonJake Luton had a day in line with what you would expect form a rookie. It was the fourth longest first completion for an NFL rookie in history. Then, needing a two-point conversion to tie the game, Luton threw behind DJ Chark. For the game, Luton completed 26 of 38 passes for 304 yards. • The Ugly: In the third quarter, Luton made a bad decision and throw under pressure and that led to an interception by Vernon Hargreaves III.

The Jaguars played far better than they had before the break, but the slide continued on Sunday at TIAA Bank Field. Jacksonville’s 27-25 loss to the Texans marked the seventh consecutive since a Week 1 win over the Colts. The Jaguars had three drives to try and tie things up in the final quarter and nearly did. The Jaguars visit Green Bay next week, the first team in a rugged second half schedule. Luton got the call to start over the Jaguars bye week when X-rays revealed fractures in the thumb of Minshew.

That means that going into tonight’s Saints-Buccaneers showdown, home teams are 65-65-1 so far this season. The .500 mark is lower than last year’s .518 mark by home teams that was the lowest home field success rate since the NFL expanded to 32 teams in 2002. Las Vegas though has taken control on its first two drives of the second half. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Jaguars have been here before. The Jaguars (1-6) are last in the AFC South, the same spot they occupied in each of the last two seasons and three times in the last four years. The Texans haven’t brought up the rear in the South since 2013. One of them will double their win total and escape the AFC South cellar when they meet Sunday. “Man, they just need to forfeit the game,” Jaguars defensive end Josh Allen quipped.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – With Gardner Minshew dealing with a thumb injury, Jaguars head coach Doug Marrone said Monday that he will go with rookie Jake Luton as the team’s starting quarterback Sunday against the Houston Texans. Luton, like Minshew, was a 6th round pick of the Jaguars. Unlike Minshew, Luton did not have the benefit of preseason games to get his feet underneath him in the preseason. When asked if there was anything that he could see in practice that would cause Marrone to not start Luton, Marrone said, “I’ve watched him enough (in practice). Luton will become the fifth quarterback to start a game for the Jaguars since Doug Marrone took over.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jaguars quarterback Gardner Minshew will miss next week’s game as he battles a thumb injury, according to a report from the NFL Network. Minshew reportedly has multiple fractures and a strained ligament in his thumb, injuries that were not disclosed by the second-year player until X-rays during Jacksonville’s bye week. According to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Minshew will be placed on the inactive list prior to the Week 9 game against the Texans at TIAA Bank Field. Sources: #Jaguars QB Gardner Minshew is expected to be inactive for next week’s game vs the #Texans. Jacksonville’s offense has been erratic and Minshew has struggled the last several games, likely as a result of his thumb injury.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. The Jacksonville Jaguars promoted quarterback Mike Glennon from the practice squad to the active roster Tuesday and placed linebacker Quincy Williams on injured reserve. Williams, a fifth-round draft pick who was benched last season, had surgery for a core muscle injury last month. Glennon gives the Jaguars an experienced backup heading into the opener against Indianapolis on Sunday. Rookie sixth-round draft pick Jake Luton beat out Glennon for the backup spot, but the veteran might be a better option, if needed, to fill in for starter Gardner Minshew early in the season. Jacksonville also rounded out its 16-man practice squad by signing defensive tackle Daniel Ekuale and cornerback Sidney Jones.

Jaguars roster analysis: Young, inexperienced, lacking stars

Read full article: Jaguars roster analysis: Young, inexperienced, lacking stars

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. The Jaguars set their roster at 53 after making cuts Saturday. One thing is clear, whether you call it a rebuild, blowing up the roster, or a youth movement, this is a very young team, one that needs stars to emerge in 2020. Add to that eight players who were rookies last year, and the Jaguars have 24 players out of 53 who have played one year in the NFL or fewer. Im a firm believer that if you have a young quarterback and in our case, we do have a young quarterback and Gardner Minshew. On a Monday, I would obviously go to the roster, and I would start with the secondary, Brunell said.

Jaguars make final cuts, keep rookie QB Luton to back up Minshew

Read full article: Jaguars make final cuts, keep rookie QB Luton to back up Minshew

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. The Jaguars made their final roster cuts on Saturday, with the most notable news that they kept a rookie quarterback and waived a pair of veterans at the position. All 12 Jacksonville draft picks and four undrafted free agents made the 53-man roster, including sixth-round pick Jake Luton, who will back up Gardner Minshew II at quarterback to start the season. The Jaguars parted ways with both Josh Dobbs and Mike Glennon in Saturday cuts. Luton was a sixth-round draft pick out of Oregon State and performed well enough in camp that he made both Dobbs and Glennon expendable. He and Minshew are the only quarterbacks on the Jaguars roster.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. The Jacksonville Jaguars signed their final four draft picks Monday, including first-rounder KLavon Chaisson. Fifth-round safety Daniel Thomas, sixth-round quarterback Jake Luton and seventh-round kick returner Chris Claybrooks also signed rookie deals. Jacksonville now has its largest draft class 12 players under contract a day before rookies are scheduled to report for COVID-19 testing. Under the NFLs rookie slotting system, Chaisson was scheduled to get a four-year deal worth $13.3 million that includes a $7.3 million signing bonus. The contract includes a team option for a fifth year.
