College students test positive for coronavirus, throw party
OXFORD, Ohio โ An Ohio college student house held a party over the Labor Day weekend that included people who had recently tested positive for the coronavirus, according to police body camera footage. Oxford, Ohio, police cited six men who attended a house party near Miami University on Saturday for violating the stateโs mass gathering and quarantine ordinance. "Thereโs an input on the computer that you tested positive for COVID?โโYes,โ the student answers. He goes on to disclose that he tested positive a week before and that every single person at the party has COVID-19, including two people from the house across the street. More than 1,000 Miami University students have tested positive for COVID-19 since classes started this fall, according to WKRC.
As California burns, the winds arrive and the lights go out
That's the situation now in Northern California, where high and dry winds are expected until Wednesday. The fire danger also is high in Southern California, where new fires were burning in Los Angeles, San Bernardino and San Diego counties. Evacuation orders were expanded to more mountain communities Monday as the largest blaze, the Creek Fire, churned through the Sierra National Forest in Central California. The fire moved 15 miles (24 kilometers) in a single day during the weekend and burned 56 square miles (145.04 square kilometers). California has seen 900 wildfires since Aug. 15, many of them started by an intense series of thousands of lightning strikes in mid-August.

Increase in Florida COVID-19 cases smallest since mid-June
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. While health experts are concerned that the Labor Day holiday could spread additional cases of coronavirus, data released Monday by the Florida Department of Health shows the increase in cases continuing to drop from peaks experienced in June and July -- after spikes in cases after Memorial Day and the Fourth of July. The state added 1,838 new cases its dashboard on Monday, bringing the total to 648,269 -- but the smallest daily increase since June 15. Growth in local caseloads was well off the summer peaks, but more similar to other recent days. The Florida Health Department said 4.8 million tests have now been conducted in the state in the last six months. Florida surpassed 12,000 deaths linked to the coronavirus on Sunday, but added only 22 on Monday, according to state data.

Signs informing customers of the rules could be seen before entering bars along Jacksonville Beach. A lot of people are wearing masks, but as soon as you walk in the bar, they take it off.In June, several Jacksonville Beach bars closed due to COVID-19 cases and then reopened. Jacksonville Beach police reminded those who were drinking to do so safely and reiterated that there is no drinking in public on the beach proper.
As COVID-19 deaths slide, vigilance urged over long holiday
Officials have been urging Floridians to wear face masks and observe social distancing throughout the three-day holiday weekend, particularly at beaches and other public places. On Saturday, the state reported nearly 3,700 news cases of COVID-19, pushing the total number of infections to nearly 644,000 since the outbreak began in the spring. The 60 new deaths from the coronavirus brought the weekly average of deaths now at 102 to its lowest since July 18. The state reported 3,235 people were hospitalized with a primary diagnosis of COVID-19. Most beaches were expected to remain open over the holiday weekend.

A rule of thumb is you want to resist going into large crowds or enclosed public spaces, Jenkins said, adding that outdoors is the safest option. Jacksonville Beach police said if they see people purposely not social distancing or following COVID-19 rules, they report it to the department of health. Jacksonville Beach police said this weekend you will see more police out than you normally would because of the large crowds.

Numerous parking lots to San Diego, Orange and Los Angeles County beaches closed after they filled to capacity and lifeguards reported seeing large crowds. People stuck close to the surf line at beaches along Los Angeles County's 72 miles (116 kilometres) of coastline. Because of the pandemic, L.A County beaches were closed during the Fourth of July weekend. Downtown Los Angeles reached 110 degrees (43.3 Celsius) on Saturday. Los Angeles County was providing close to 50 centers the largest site activation in memory in libraries, community centers and even a museum in the L.A. suburb of Gardena.

Troopers and Motor Carrier Officers will be on patrol in full force for the upcoming 78-hour Labor Day holiday travel period focusing their attention on speeders, unrestrained occupants, as well as distracted and impaired drivers, said Colonel Gary Vowell, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Safety. Last year, troopers reported nine fatal crashes and 10 fatalities during the 2019 holiday period statewide. The Hands-Free Georgia Act prohibits all drivers from using hand-held cell phones while driving. New Jacksonville dog park opens at Abess Park off Girvin Road

NEW YORK The Telluride Film Festival, the annual film retreat held in the Colorado mountains and one of the fall movie season's top launching pads, has been canceled. Organizers said Tuesday that the festival's 47th edition, scheduled for Labor Day weekend, was scuttled entirely due to the coronavirus pandemic. Through much of the summer, Telluride had clung to hopes that cancellation wouldn't be necessary. Telluride is part of a late summer-early fall foursome of major festivals, along with the Venice Film Festival, the Toronto International Film Festival and the New York Film Festival. As gas prices drop, 35% projected to travel for Labor Day weekend

According to the travel platform, a majority of those traveling will drive to their destination. According to AAA, the national average for gas is more than a dime cheaper than it was a month ago, sitting at $2.64. On the week, nearly half of all states saw gas price averages decrease by at least a nickel, said Jeanette Casselano, AAA spokesperson. Therefore, pump prices continue to decline across the country.According to TripAdvisor, the two busiest days to travel over Labor Day weekend will be Friday, Aug. 30 and Monday, Sept. 2.
