NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. โ A year after Trent Fort was shot and killed in Callahan, close friends, family and loved ones gathered for a peaceful candlelight vigil in his memory. Wednesdayโs somber occasion was reminiscent of when more than 100 people filled West Nassau High Schoolโs stadium, holding candles to remember the 16-year-old. During the vigil, some wore a shirt that read โTrenton 21.โ Twenty-one was Fortโs football jersey number. Jackson Rowell honored as All-Star Athlete
Jackson Rowell is a senior and captain of the wrestling team at West Nassau High School. Jackson is also a defensive end and tight end on the football, having made the All-Academic state team. Jackson currently has a 4.5 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society and the Future Business Leaders of America. He volunteers with local food and clothing drives.
200 West Nassau students quarantined after 20 new positive tests
More than 200 West Nassau High School students were quarantined last week after roughly 20 classmates tested positive for COVID-19, the Nassau County School District confirmed Tuesday. โWest Nassau did have around 20 students test positive, which resulted in just over 200 students being quarantined,โ Assistant Superintendent Mark Durham told News4Jax in an emailed statement. According to figures provided by the district, the district saw 41 new positive tests last week, 34 of them among students. Because of that, 346 students and six staff who had close contact with the infected individuals were placed in quarantine. Itโs unclear if the district will close the high school temporarily in light of the rash of new cases.
Father of 17-year-old accused of killing classmate warned him about teen he was hanging out with
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ Evidence against one of two 17-year-olds accused in the shooting death of their West Nassau High School classmate earlier this year shows the father of the teen accused of firing the fatal shot had warned his son to stop hanging around with the other teen. Gaven Smith and Ashton Riggs are charged in the Feb. 24 death of 16-year-old Trent Fort. โAs soon as he opened the door, he struck me in the face,โ Smith can be heard saying. Deputies wrote that one of them punched Smith and Smith fired a single shot, hitting Fort, who later died at a hospital. Smith took marijuana, cash and a wallet and ran away, giving everything but the wallet to Riggs.
Teens held in death of West Nassau student face new upgraded charges
CALLAHAN, Fla. โ Two teenagers arrested shortly after a 16-year-old West Nassau High School student was shot and killed earlier this year are facing new, adult charges. The Sheriffโs Office said Trent Fort was shot in the chest after getting into a confrontation during a drug deal after school on Feb. 24. He was arrested shortly after Fortโs murder at a McDonaldโs in Callahan and his brother was tracked to a wooded area in the Spring Lakes Estates neighborhood. Fortโs parents said theyโve never met the teens, but they learned who they were on the day of the shooting. โIโm pretty positive that there will be more arrests, and Iโm just waiting on it,โ said Paige Hall, Fortโs mother.
Nassau teacher, her father killed after tree falls on SUV mid-drive
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ Two people died after an tree fell on an SUV on the Northside just before noon Thursday, Jacksonville Fire and Rescue confirmed. The oak tree fell across the road, striking the car mid-drive. The West Nassau High School athletic director told News4Jax that Carrie Higginbotham, a math teacher at the school, died in the crash. She said that the 37-year-oldโs father was also in the SUV and died. The high school posted on Facebook:Drivers following behind the car say they were horrified.

Three and a half months after a West Nassau High School football player was shot and killed, his family is still desperately seeking answers. John Phillips, the familyโs attorney, said the Sheriffโs Office told him itโs waiting to get it right. The Sheriffโs Office never identified them, but the family and Phillips said the suspected shooter also went to West Nassau High. The family believes race played a part in the death of their son, who was biracial. Nassau County school district releases tentative graduation plan
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ Nassau Countyโs high schools are planning to hold graduation ceremonies this summer, assuming social distancing rules are lifted by then. On Thursday, the Nassau County School District released a tentative plan to let seniors graduate in person in late June โ or mid-July if the first option falls through. Under the tentative plan, the countyโs high schools would graduate the week of June 22 with the ceremonies being held at 9 a.m. throughout the week at each schoolโs football field. Hereโs the schedule:June 22: Fernandina Beach High SchoolJune 23: West Nassau High SchoolJune 24: Hilliard Middle-Senior High SchoolJune 25: Yulee High SchoolIf it rains on any of those days, the schoolโs graduation would be moved to 7 p.m. the same day. CALLAHAN, Fla. โ Friends, family and classmates gathered on Saturday to say their final goodbyes to Trent Fort, the West Nassau High School football player who died in a shooting. Funeral services began at 11 a.m. at Callahan First Baptist Church, which is across the street from the high school. โHe didnโt deserve this, and these people here -- I have no words for West Nassau and the town of Callahan. The teen was driven to West Nassau High School -- about 8 minutes away -- and then transported to a hospital in critical condition, the spokeswoman said. Malik Green said he spoke with his friend, Fort, in the parking lot after school -- about an hour before the shooting. โMostโ of the three involved went to West Nassau High, the spokeswoman said. Itโs unclear why the 16-year-old was taken to the high school after the shooting, but the spokeswoman said at least four people were in a car with the victim.
