Horizon Terminal Services and SSA Atlantic, LLC, have reached settlements, while Hoegh Autoliners and Grimaldi Deep Sea SPA remain as the remaining defendants. The fire, which occurred on a 15-floor cargo ship loaded with cars bound for western Africa, resulted in injuries to at least 10 firefighters during firefighting efforts. The cause of the fire was determined to be an improperly secured and loaded car on the ship. The remaining defendants are scheduled to go to trial on April 4th of this year.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Four firefighters suffered burns Tuesday while trying to rescue someone they thought was inside a burning home in the New Town neighborhood of Northwest Jacksonville. The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department was called just after 1 p.m. and saw flames and heavy smoke coming from the house on Acorn Street near West 2nd Street. Neighbors said someone was trapped inside, so four firefighters forced their way inside and encountered high heat and flames. “Every day in this city (there are) house fires and these firefighters respond to them,” Powers said. The man who neighbors believed to still be in the house said he was not surprised the firefighters were told that someone was probably inside.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Firefighters are battling a pair of wildfires in the Panhandle that have consumed more than 2,500 acres, closed a portion of Interstate 10 and destroyed structures. JFRD Battalion Chief Trace Barrow told News4Jax on Thursday the firefighters haven’t slept since they got the call at 10 p.m. Wednesday that they would be traveling to the Panhandle. On Thursday, JFRD said, firefighters worked to put out structure fires near Milton, Florida, where the Five Mile Swamp Fire raged. “I know that just the area that we that our crews have worked, at least 10 to 12 residential houses were destroyed, completely destroyed," Barrow said. For Barrow, the hardest part is seeing families return to their now unrecognizable homes.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Three members of the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department have tested positive for COVID-19 and 77 have self-isolated, Mayor Lenny Curry said Monday. After the first firefighter tested positive last week, according to Powers, 47 firefighters and paramedics from all three shifts of Station 28 self-quarantined and were tested for COVID-19 while the station was being thoroughly sanitized. When the firefighters were tested for COVID-19 over the weekend, Powers said, a second firefighter tested positive and then a third. An entire shift of 10 firefighters from Station 54 has self-quarantined, according to the city. Twenty other JFRD members have self-quarantined due to other exposures unrelated to the three firefighters who tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the total number to 77.
