Muscogee return South nearly 200 years after forced removal
Native Americans whose ancestors were forced out of the Southeast almost 200 years ago during a purge that cleared the way for white settlers returned Friday for a two-day festival with a name that sums up its purpose: “We have come back.” A busload of Muscogee (Creek) Nation citizens and others in vans and cars traveled from their homes in Oklahoma and elsewhere for a celebration in the east Alabama city of Oxford, located on what once was part of Arbeka, a Muscogee community dating back 12,000 years. Land that once was a village inhabited by an estimated 3,000 people is now the site of a city park with sports fields and a walking trail, said RaeLynn Butler, who manages the nation's historical and preservation department.

Orlando-based Coliseum of Comics, the largest comics and collectibles retailer in the Southeast, announced today that, effective immediately, it has purchased and will be assuming operations of the former Borderlands Comics & Games in Jacksonville. The move will bring the number of stores in the Coliseum chain to nine. Hours after one area team claimed a Pop Warner football championship, another one followed. The mitey mite Forestview Outlaws beat the Sarasota Sun Devils 19-0 to win the Mid-America/Southeast championship on Wednesday in Winter Garden. The Outlaws beat Sarasota 39-8 in the regional championship. COVID-19 forced the cancellation of the full Pop Warner Super Bowl and moved what championships were left out of Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex. Instead of a traditional Super Bowl which includes qualifiers from eight regions across the country, only two regions played this year.

The Westside Wildcats ended another season with a win, this one a 25-0 rout of the Fort Myers Firecats on Wednesday in St. Knox Annis, CJ Barnes, Ty Keister and Za’khari Greene were all responsible for touchdowns in the championship game win. The Wildcats won the junior peewee Pop Warner Super Bowl in 2019 and the Division I championship in 2018. Zeta soaks Southeast after swamping Gulf Coast; 6 dead
Hurricane Zeta passed through Wednesday with a tidal surge that caused the boat to become unmoored. In Atlanta and New Orleans, drivers dodged trees in roads and navigated intersections without traffic signals. John Bel Edwards said the state sustained “catastrophic” damage on Grand Isle in Jefferson Parish, where Zeta punched three breaches in the levee. Edwards ordered the Louisiana National Guard to fly in soldiers to assist with search and rescue efforts and urged continued caution. Zeta was the 27th named storm of a historically busy year with more than a month left in the Atlantic hurricane season.

Hurricane Dorian moves north, swipes parts of South Georgia
Georgia Power said about 2,800 homes and businesses were without power Wendesday evening in coastal areas of Georgia. In 2017, Hurricane Irma howled into St. Marys, decimating the city's docks and boat ramp. Affected by both Hurricane Matthew and Hurricane Irma, St. Marys was prepared for Dorian. As of the 8 p.m. advisory Wednesday from the National Hurricane Center, the storm was moving north-northwest at 8 mph. The center of the storm was about 130 miles south of Charleston, South Carolina.

Back to school: Camden county students return to security upgrades, new teachers
CAMDEN COUNTY, Ga. - Camden County students and faculty head back-to-school Friday in Southeast, Georgia. Over the summer, the district made a number of changes that parents and students will notice - including everything from renovations to security. The district says Mary Lee Clark Elementary and Camden Middle School both underwent major renovations over the summer. New security doors were installed in every Camden County school. She begins her first day of teaching in the Peach State on Friday and said shes determined to make her incoming students feel at ease.
