JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ Winn Dixie celebrated โRandom Acts of Kindness Dayโ on Wednesday by giving back to some of the communityโs essential health care workers. Youth mental health emergencies up 300% amid pandemic, Baptist Health says
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ The COVID-19 pandemic is taking a heavy toll on the mental health of children in Northeast Florida, according to behavioral health staff at Wolfson Childrenโs Hospital. Dr. Terrie Andrews, system administrator for Baptist Behavioral Health and Wolfson Childrenโs Behavioral Health, says her department has seen a 300% increase in the amount of behavioral health emergency admissions, a 40% increase in calls to the office and a 20% increase in new outpatients. In response to the massive spike, Wolfson Childrenโs Hospital opened a 24/7 helpline for kids and teens. โItโs a confidential helpline that is staffed around-the-clock by trained mental health experts,โ hospital spokesperson Alexis Kirkland said. So, itโs a worthwhile investment.โBrown-Woofter said a strong system of mental health care has a ripple effect across a society affecting even the economy, which has also suffered under COVID-19.

Still, WithLove Charity founder Taylor Scheibe, who is a cancer survivor herself, said she wanted to brighten the day of the children getting treatment. โSo for me, itโs most important to make sure these kids realize that theyโre still kids, theyโre so loved and theyโre surrounded by so much support during this hard journey.โThe organizationโs next event is Valentineโs Day.
19-year-old charged after child suffers broken ribs, fractured skull and brain bleeds, deputies say
A child was hospitalized over the weekend with serious injuries that investigators said they believe was the result of child abuse by a man who was watching the child. Timothy Cassel, 19, was arrested Sunday on a first-degree felony charge of aggravated child abuse. According to the arrest report, the child was injured sometime between Friday and Saturday evening while being watched by Cassel. According to the report, a church member was checking on Casselโs wellbeing when he woke up Cassel from his sleep. The report states that when Cassel woke up, he uttered that he had shaken and abused a child.

The helicopter is dedicated solely to infants and children, with a flight crew thatโs highly trained and has advanced medical capabilities. The Kids Kare helicopter is the latest addition to the Wolfson Childrenโs Critical Care Transport Fleet, which is also comprised of a fixed-wing airplane and three Kids Kare Mobile ICUs. โAs the regionโs only state-designated pediatric trauma center, we are committed to caring for the most vulnerable children of all ages,โ said Wolfson Childrenโs Hospital President Michael D. Aubin. โOur pediatric specialists are experts in their fields and are trained to provide lifesaving care for even the most serious and complex cases.โ

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ Babies in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit at Wolfson Childrenโs Hospital of Jacksonville celebrated Halloween in adorable style this year. The tiny tots were dressed as adorable treats such as Jif peanut butter, jelly, Chick-fil-A and more. The team will dress up the babies in costumes on Saturday and post more photos on the Wolfson Childrenโs Hospital Facebook page. It was definitely a sweet treat for parents and staff. High schooler organizes pop-up drive-in theater at Town Center to raise money for childrenโs hospital
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ Looking for a safe way to raise money to support healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic, Adarsh Aratikatla along with classmate Javier Neret came up with the idea of using a drive-in movie theater to help Wolfson Childrenโs Hospital. After months of planning, Aratikatla, an incoming senior at the Bolles School and co-founder of the Wolfson Childrenโs Hospital Club, is planning to host the first movie showing in an empty parking lot at The Markets at Town Center. โI think this will be a fun event where people can bring their families and also you can watch a movie. None of the movie theaters are open right now so itโll be a fun experience.โThe group plans to show โBack to the Futureโ to about 60 people who donated nearly $800 to Wolfson Childrenโs Hospital. The group plans to show classic movies like โGooniesโ and โFerris Bullerโs Day Off.โThe group is not selling tickets for the events, but they are asking for free-will donations.
Nurse killed at home in Goodbyโs Creek neighborhood
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ A 45-year-old woman was shot and killed Wednesday evening in the Goodbyโs Creek neighborhood, according to the Jacksonville Sheriffโs Office. โWe knew the neighbor, tried to go in,โ neighbor Jane Parkinson said. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office dive team van and a couple of police vehicles could be seen Thursday at the home in Goodby's Creek. According to city records and other neighbors, a family moved into the home about two years ago after doing major renovations on the house. โThey made terrific improvements to the property they bought and basically have been rather diligent -- to me, model neighbors,โ neighbor Paul Heck said.
