While the pandemic has made many of the proms virtual, the Jacksonville committee is continuing the tradition with an in-person, drive-thru red carpet Friday afternoon. Detour on Union Street for several days after fire at old downtown funeral home
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ Part of Union Street will be closed for several days after a three-alarm fire that started Saturday at an abandoned commercial building in downtown Jacksonville, authorities said. Jacksonville police also taped off Union Street between Laura and Main streets. The Jacksonville Sheriffโs Office said Sunday that due to the fire, Union Street at Main Street will remain closed for several days, creating traffic delays for those coming into downtown on eastbound Union Street. The current detour diverts eastbound Union Street traffic to southbound Laura Street. Due to yesterday's structure fire, Union St. will remain closed for several days.
Operation Boost: City partners with FSCJ & WIT for job readiness program

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ With just more than three weeks until Election Day, Dr. Michael Binder from the University of North Florida Public Opinion Research Lab joins this edition of โThis Week in Jacksonvilleโ to discuss two different polls that were recently released. Florida State College at Jacksonville sociology Professor Dr. J.R. Woodward and political science professor Dr. Daniel Cronrath then dig into the six proposed constitutional amendments on the November ballot in Florida. Each needs 60% of the vote to pass.
2 dead, 1 injured in crash at Roosevelt Boulevard & Plymouth Street, police say
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ Two people died and another was hospitalized after a crash early Sunday morning at Roosevelt Boulevard and Plymouth Street, the Jacksonville Sheriffโs Office said. The crash happened about 2:20 a.m. near Florida State College at Jacksonvilleโs Kent Campus. The Sheriffโs Office said two other people were seriously injured and were taken to a hospital, where one of them died. Both vehicles were in the northbound lanes of Roosevelt Boulevard, but JSO did not say how the crash happened. Anyone who witnessed the crash or has any information is asked to call the Sheriffโs Office at 904-630-0500.
Online forum hosted by FSCJ focuses on racial diversity
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ More than 500 people across the United States watched an online forum about racial diversity that was hosted by Florida State College at Jacksonville on Thursday night. The panelists for the forum talked about racial diversity and why itโs important for everyone to be open and accepting of people of color or other ethnic backgrounds. The subject of diversity then shifted to racial injustice toward African Americans following the deaths of Floyd and Taylor, and locally, the shooting death of Ahmaud Arbery. Thatโs why the panel of speakers chose to discuss these matters with the hope that people watching across the country will walk away with a better understanding of racial, social and ethnic injustice and discrimination. Organizers said itโs OK to protest what is perceived to be a racial or social injustice if the protest does not involve violence or the threat of violence.
JTA, FSCJ partner on education, autonomous vehicle testing
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. The Jacksonville Transportation Authority and Florida State College at Jacksonville have agreed to expand JTAs autonomous vehicle program with testing and educational initiatives on FSCJ campuses. Through four initial phases, the U2C will leverage the existing Skyway infrastructure and expand that network through ground-level connections and convert those structures to support autonomous vehicles. The first phase, the Bay Street Innovation Corridor is fully funded. Our community is leading the way to the future of autonomous vehicles, said FSCJ President Dr. John Avendano. Through this MOU, JTA and FSCJ will develop an Agile Plan for on-campus use.
FSCJ confirms its first 2 cases of coronavirus
The patients represent the first two cases confirmed by FSCJ since the coronavirus outbreak began. FSCJโs cases are likely among the 158 coronavirus patients identified in Duval County. The two cases confirmed by FSCJ come less than a week after the University of North Florida announced that a university employee had tested positive for coronavirus.
Florida universities move online to avoid coronavirus
University of FloridaOn Wednesday, the University of Florida emailed all faculty instructing them to move classes online no later than March 16 to avoid face-to-face contact. Jacksonville security guard awarded college scholarship for saving firefighterโs life
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ A UF Health Jacksonville security officer credited with saving the life of a firefighter who was stabbed in the line of duty was awarded a college scholarship Monday in recognition of her heroism. City and community leaders presented security officer and Air Force veteran Davay Kinsey with the Florida State College at Jacksonville Presidentโs Heroism Award and a scholarship to the collegeโs Fire Academy of the South, so she can accomplish her goal of becoming an emergency medical technician. When the ambulance arrived, Kinsey could tell that one of the firefighters โ Capt. โFrom the moment I met Davay, I immediately identified qualities of strength, confidence, teamwork and leadership,โ Chief Powers said. โWhat better way to do that than to help her achieve her own personal and professional goal?โ he said.

Rick Scott addresses student debt, questioned on gun control
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Sen. Rick Scott was in the River City on Monday to address the issue of student loan debt, but he was also asked about gun control during his visit. Scott met with students, parents and education officials at the Florida State College at Jacksonville's downtown campus. During the meeting, Scott was asked in light of a Washington Post op-ed whether he believes Sen. Mitch McConnell should call back the Senate to address gun reform. Following the shooting in Parkland, the Florida Legislature passed a red flag law, which Scott signed into law. If you're threatening to harm yourself or you're threatening to harm someone else, you shouldn't have a gun.

Scott met with students, parents and education officials at the Florida State College at Jacksonville's downtown campus. The former Florida governor hopes to find ways to make higher education more affordable for students. It impacts their ability to start a business, buy a home and so many things," Scott said. "I've been doing this around the state to get people's ideas about how we can figure out how to get students higher education at a lower price with no debt."
Foul play not suspected after remains found near FSCJ South Campus
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Foul play was not suspected after human remains were located near the Florida State College at Jacksonville campus, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. Police revealed the new information on Wednesday night and also said the remains are believed to be of a man. It was the second time in a week JSO officers were investigating remains found in a wooded area. Last Thursday, human remains were found when someone was clearing a wooded area off Utsey Drive. On Monday, the Sheriff's Office identified the remains as those of 18-year-old Corbin Johnson, who was reported missing one year ago.
