On Thursday, Jacksonville City Council members and other organizations met virtually to explore some short- and long-term solutions to food deserts, or areas with less or no access to fresh, healthy food. One of those areas is the New Town neighborhood near Edward Waters College. “This is a food desert without fresh fruit, fresh vegetables,” said Marcia Ellison, a 19-year resident of the New Town neighborhood. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Two men were found shot Monday night in Jacksonville’s New Town neighborhood and hospitalized for treatment of serious injuries, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. A sergeant at the scene said police were called to Windle Street at about 9 p.m. Circumstances surrounding what led to the shooting were unclear. An arrest wasn’t announced and police did not have a description of the shooter. It’s unclear if the shooter fled on foot or if that person was in a vehicle.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A shooting in the back parking lot of a Checkers Drive-In Restaurant on Kings Road left Sunday afternoon left one man dead and one man critically injured, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. Arriving officers found two men in their early 20s suffering from multiple gunshot wounds inside their black four-door sedan. JSO is working to identify these men and notify their next of kin. "I think they are just stopping people who are coming through, trying to identify. There are family members that have come towards trying to find out if these are their family members or not.

Driver injured after crash involving ATV

Investigators with the Jacksonville Sheriffs Office said someone was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries Wednesday after a crash on Powhattan Street in the New Town neighborhood. According to the Sheriffs Office, officers responded to the scene at about 6:35 p.m. The crash involved an all-terrain vehicle and another car. A neighbor told News4Jax that he was outside when he saw the driver of the ATV collide with a Chevy Impala. No other injuries were reported in the crash.
