Former Jacksonville sheriff, Nat Glover, says he will not let cynicism take root despite the shooting in New Town this weekend and, like 63 years ago he still believes in a better world and that we can move forward.

The racially motivated murders in Jacksonville’s New Town community have created grief and additional strain in an urban neighborhood that was already experiencing challenges. There are no grocery stores in New Town, no restaurants, or access to shopping.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Two men were found shot Monday night in Jacksonville’s New Town neighborhood and hospitalized for treatment of serious injuries, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. A sergeant at the scene said police were called to Windle Street at about 9 p.m. Circumstances surrounding what led to the shooting were unclear. An arrest wasn’t announced and police did not have a description of the shooter. It’s unclear if the shooter fled on foot or if that person was in a vehicle.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A shooting in the back parking lot of a Checkers Drive-In Restaurant on Kings Road left Sunday afternoon left one man dead and one man critically injured, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. Arriving officers found two men in their early 20s suffering from multiple gunshot wounds inside their black four-door sedan. JSO is working to identify these men and notify their next of kin. Police say they found that man standing in the middle of Morgan Street shortly after 12:30 a.m. Officers secured the scene on Morgan Street. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. A man was hospitalized with critical injuries Thursday afternoon after a shooting in the New Town neighborhood, according to the Jacksonville Sheriffs Office. Doug Molina said police were dispatched to West 5th Street around 4 p.m. in reference to a ShotSpotter call. ShotSpotter is a gunshot detection system thats used in various locations throughout the city. Molina said the victim, who was not identified, was shot several times. Investigators with the Jacksonville Sheriffs Office said someone was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries Wednesday after a crash on Powhattan Street in the New Town neighborhood. According to the Sheriffs Office, officers responded to the scene at about 6:35 p.m. The crash involved an all-terrain vehicle and another car. A neighbor told News4Jax that he was outside when he saw the driver of the ATV collide with a Chevy Impala. No other injuries were reported in the crash.

A man was shot in the finger in the New Town neighborhood Saturday night, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. Officers responded to the 300 block of West 5th Street at around 9:20 p.m. The man was treated at the scene by the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department. When police arrived, according to the Sheriff's Office, they found a man in his 30s dead in the road of at least one gunshot wound. The Sheriff's Office said several rounds were fired from the car.
