Preliminary information shows the man was walking along the highway when he was struck by the vehicle. Police said it wasn’t clear if the man was walking in the road or on a sidewalk when he was hit. The tanker was carrying 6,000 gallons of gasoline and 2,500 gallons of diesel when flames sparked. All westbound lanes of I-10 at Hammond Boulevard were closed while crews transfered the fuel. Otherwise, traffic is being redirected onto the 295 exit.
