JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ After visiting a federal vaccination site at the Gateway Mall on Monday, the next stop for Vice President Kamala Harris was at a local food bank to highlight food insecurity and how the coronavirus relief bill aims to address the issue. Florida Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried helped facilitate a discussion between Harris and other local lawmakers about the issue during a roundtable at Feeding Northeast Florida. โThe president, he says it all the time, which is: The most important thing that we can do when people are suffering is to see them, to hear them and to help them,โ Harris said. โAnd when we think about the issue of food insecurity, letโs be clear, we are talking about hunger in Americans. Fried said that 40% of Black families and 39% of Hispanic families in Florida are experiencing chronic hunger.
Federal vaccination site at Gateway Mall to administer first doses through April 7
AdThe four federal sites in Florida -- the three others located in Orlando, Tampa and Miami -- will only offer second doses of the Pfizer vaccine April 7 through April 14. The satellite sites associated with each hub site -- including the two satellite sites in Duval County -- will continue to only administer second-dose shots between Wednesday and April 14. All satellite sites will return to their original locations over the next three weeks. AdFDEM said Monday that the state is working closely with the federal government to evaluate if the federal sites can remain open past April 28. FDEMโs announcement Monday came on the same day Vice President Kamala visited the Gateway Mall site and the same day the state expanded vaccine eligibility to Floridians age 50 and older.
Doctor concerned that Gateway vaccination site is closing too soon
Jacksonville, Fla. โ Dr. Sunil Joshi, president of the Duval County Medical Society Foundation, is concerned that the Gateway Mall and two satellite federal vaccination site are about to stop giving first doses before the majority of Floridians get their shots. The latest Florida Department of Health statistics show that statewide, 4,252,250 people have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. AdDavid Cox, who got a shot at the vaccination site at Gateway Mall, said itโs time to lower the age requirement even more. But he said they should not wait and he believes the Gateway Mall site should be opened up to all age groups now. The Gateway Mall site is expected to be open until May 3.
Caregivers who bring someone 65+ to get vaccine can also get a shot
Family caregivers may assist with daily activities, personal care, or medical needs. Family caregivers qualify as health care workers with direct patient contact in Florida. AdGibson said the idea is to encourage both seniors and their caregivers to get vaccinate. โIf the charge or senior has a vaccine, but the caregiver doesnโt, thatโs not really the safest environment,โ Gibson said. โTo me, it sort of makes sense to get caregivers vaccinated.
