Beaches dealing with sub-tropical system and mini-norโeaster
Hurricane season is still officially beginning on June 1st, but often times we see sub-tropical (winter, cold core) systems develop over the Atlantic Ocean and then drift southward over tropical warm waters. After a few days of spinning over these warmer waters, prest-o-change-o and we end up with a hybrid system that the National Hurricane Center ultimately names, even before the official start of hurricane season.

Spain's foreign minister visits Senegal to discuss migration
(AP Photo/Javier Bauluz)DAKAR โ Spainโs foreign minister met Sunday with Senegal's president in the West African countryโs capital Sunday to discuss the sudden increase of Senegalese migrants attempting to reach the Canary Islands by boat. Spanish Foreign Minister Arancha Gonzรกlez Laya met with President Macky Sall in Dakar to discuss migration and border cooperation between Spain, the European Union and Senegal. Human rights groups have been warning about the reopening of the Atlantic route to the Canary Islands since late 2019, when arrivals began increasing slowly. He participated in the meeting between Spain's foreign minister and Senegalese counterpart Aรฏssata Tall Sall. Sarr said they would work with Spain to increase legal ways for Senegalese to work in Europe, including circular migration programs.
Spain in diplomatic push over migrant flow to Canary Islands
(AP Photo/Javier Bauluz)MADRID โ The Spanish government is ratcheting up its response to the steady build-up of migrant arrivals to the Canary Islands from Africa, including a fresh diplomatic offensive. Moroccans have been the most numerous among recent migrant arrivals to the Spanish archipelago, whose nearest islands lie around 70 miles (110 kms) west of the north African nation. Around half of those arrivals โand most of the deathsโ have been in the past 30 days, a spike that has strained resources on the Canary Islands. Spanish Transport Minister Josรฉ Luis รbalos, also on the island, pledged more resources to the stretched maritime rescue services. The IOM's Spain envoy, Marรญa Jesรบs Herrera, who was on a field visit in the islands this week, described the situation as โcritical."

Spain opens 2nd migrant camp on overrun Gran Canaria island
The establishment of a second temporary migrant processing center on the island of Gran Canaria comes amid increasing criticism from local authorities and human rights groups. A pier on the quiet southwest coast of Gran Canaria has become the center of Spainโs ongoing humanitarian crisis. The new camp opening Wednesday will be able to hold 800 people in tents, according to the Interior Ministry. โThe Canary Islands are a powder keg. Migrant arrivals putting pressure on Spain's Canary Islands
African migrants after arriving at the coast of Gran Canaria island, Spain on Sunday, Nov. 1, 2020. Crossing the Atlantic Ocean sailing on a wooden boat, a group of 44 migrants arrived at Maspalomas beach. More than half of the 16,000 migrants who arrived this year in the Spanish islands off northwest Africa did so in the last four weeks, a sharp influx worrying international and non-profit organizations. Thatโs compared to around 1,500 arrivals recorded last year in the archipelago, better known for its vacation resorts popular among northern Europeans. The new migrant focus on the perilous Canary Islands route, first seen in 2006, has come as authorities crack down on previously popular passages across the Mediterranean Sea from North Africa to European Union countries.
Eta bringing dangerous conditions to Jacksonvilleโs beaches
JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. โ As Tropical Storm Eta inches up the Gulf Coast, projected to make landfall near Cedar Key early Thursday, conditions on the Atlantic Ocean side of Florida are starting to pick up. Lifeguards are warning people it will bring dangerous water conditions. โWeโre expecting 20 to 35 mph sustained winds, windows higher than that,โ said 1st Lt. Casey Donnell, a supervisor at Jacksonville Beach Ocean Rescue. โYour experienced swimmers, everyone is going to experience heavier surf than theyโre used to. But they will not be on chairs, and rescuers are hoping to not have to go into the water after anyone.
Hurricanes stay stronger longer after landfall than in past
(Alexander Gerst/ESA/NASA via AP)Hurricanes are keeping their staying power longer once they make landfall, spreading more inland destruction, according to a new study. Warmer ocean waters from climate change are likely making hurricanes lose power more slowly after landfall, because they act as a reserve fuel tank for moisture, the study found. It found that in the 1960s, hurricanes declined two-thirds in wind strength within 17 hours of landfall. Thereโs less study of what hurricanes do once they make landfall than out at sea, so Chakraborty said he was surprised when he saw a noticeable trend in decay taking longer. But hurricanes arenโt running out of gas as much, especially in the last 25 years when the trend accelerated, Chakraborty said.
Zeta temporarily weakens into a Tropical Storm
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ At 5 p.m. the center of Tropical Storm Zeta was crossing the Louisiana coast. The center of Hurricane Zeta was located near latitude 29.2 North, longitude 90.6 West. Weakening will occur while Zeta moves over the southeastern United States on Thursday. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 150 miles. This yearโs season has so many storms that the hurricane center had to turn to the Greek alphabet after running out of official names for only the second time in history.
New storm Zeta a hurricane threat to Mexico, US Gulf Coast
MIAMI โ Newly formed Tropical Storm Zeta gradually strengthened Sunday in the western Caribbean and forecasters said it would likely become a hurricane before hitting Mexico's resort-dotted Yucatan Peninsula and the U.S. Gulf Coast in coming days. Zeta was the earliest named 27th Atlantic storm recorded in an already historic hurricane season. The system was centered about 260 miles (420 kilometers) southeast of Cozumel island late Sunday, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said. The government is still handing out aid, including sheet roofing, to Yucatan residents hit by Hurricane Delta and Tropical Storm Gamma earlier this month. The hurricane center said it could make landfall anywhere from Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle.
Weakened Hurricane Epsilon moves north over Atlantic Ocean
MIAMI โ A weakened Hurricane Epsilon moved northward Friday over the Atlantic Ocean, a day after after skirting well east of Bermuda. Epsilon's top sustained winds fell Thursday to 85 mph (140 kph), dropping it from a Category 2 to a Category 1 storm, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said. But large ocean swells could cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions along the coast of New England and Atlantic Canada during the next couple of days, the hurricane center warned. Earlier in the week, Epsilon had gained 50 mph (80 kph) in wind speed in just 24 hours to become a major hurricane on Wednesday. This year's season has had so many storms that the hurricane center has turned to the Greek alphabet after running out of official names.
Weakened Hurricane Epsilon skirting well east of Bermuda
MIAMI โ A weakened Hurricane Epsilon skirted well east of Bermuda on Thursday night, prompting officials to lift a tropical storm warning for the Atlantic island. The Miami-based center said Epsilon was about 190 miles (300 kilometers) east of Bermuda at 11 p.m as it moved north-northwest at 9 mph (15 kph). Forecasters said the storm would track over the Atlantic Ocean well east of the island in coming hours. Earlier in the week, Epsilon had gained 50 mph (80 kph) in wind speed in just 24 hours to become a major hurricane on Wednesday. This year's season has had so many storms that the hurricane center has turned to the Greek alphabet after running out of official names.
Spanish islands struggle with migration surge amid pandemic
While Mediterranean crossings are down this year, arrivals on the Canary islands across a treacherous part of the Atlantic Ocean are up nearly 700% on the year. Beefed-up security in the Mediterranean has reduced migration from Africa to the Spanish mainland and the Balearic Islands in 2020, with 30% fewer arrivals between January and mid-October compared to a year earlier. But the surge in traffic to the Canary Islands comes at a high cost in human lives. Arguing that they lack enough resources, local and regional officials in the Canary Islands have asked the Spanish government for more help, including the use of two military facilities to process the migrants. Prime Minister Sรกnchez told parliament Wednesday that โwe have to do much moreโ in the Canaries.
Tropical Storm Teddy becomes 4th active named storm
MIAMI โ Tropical Storm Teddy formed in the Atlantic Ocean on Monday morning and is the fourth active named storm in the Atlantic basin, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center. Forecasters said Teddy was located more than 1,400 miles (2,260 kilometers) east of the Lesser Antilles. The three other active named storms are Hurricane Paulette, Tropical Depression Rene and Tropical Storm Sally. It was located about 330 miles (535 kilometers) west-northwest of the Cabo Verde Islands, forecasters said. It could briefly become a tropical storm this week.
The peak of hurricane season is here and storms are lining up
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ Sept. 10 marks the peak of hurricane season, statistically. September 10 marks the peak of the hurricane season (wjxt)Hurricane Doraโs 1964 landfall in St. Augustine is a reminder how the odds for damage increase this time of year. Cabo Verde hurricanes are often the most dangerous accounting for more than 75% of all major hurricanes developing in early to mid-September. Many of these late-season storms can be strong like in 2016 when Hurricane Matthew passed just east of Jacksonville and Hurricane Sandy which was the third costliest hurricane ever. Residents in Mexico Beach are still recovering from Hurricane Michael in 2019 (eighth most costly), and 2005โs Hurricane Wilma (ninth most costly).
2 depressions in Atlantic to become tropical storms today
MIAMI Two tropical depressions far out in the Atlantic Ocean are expected to become tropical storms on Monday, with one system already generating a warning off the coast of continental Africa. A tropical storm warning was issued for the Cabo Verde Islands due to Tropical Depression Eighteen, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said. Tropical Depression Seventeen formed late Sunday. Maximum sustained winds were measured at 35 mph. Maximum sustained winds decreased to 30 mph.

Tropical Storm Josephine weakens slightly in Atlantic Ocean
MIAMI Josephine just barely held on to its tropical storm status early Friday as it moved over the Atlantic Ocean as the earliest J-named storm in a record-setting hurricane season. Tropical storms have maximum sustained winds between 39 and 73 mph (63 and 117 kph). Josephine was the earliest tenth Atlantic named storm on record, breaking the previous record of Jose, which formed Aug. 22, 2005, according to Colorado State University hurricane researcher Phil Klotzbach. So far this year, Cristobal, Danielle, Edouard, Fay, Gonzalo, Hanna and Isaias have also set records for being the earliest named Atlantic storms of their respective place in the alphabet. Last month, Hurricane Hanna slammed the Texas Gulf Coast with high winds and rains that flooded streets and knocked out power across the region.
More tropical showers for Jacksonville
JACKOSNVILLE, Fla โ Hanna and Gonzalo are in the Gulf and the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, respectively. Yep, the earliest seventh and earliest eighth named tropical storms (no hurricanes, yet). Now, for Jacksonville, we will continue our pattern of coastal morning showers, that move to I-95 by the lunch hour and then blow-up west of town after 2pm. Saturday will be much like today, which will make it a decent day to get yard work done, but after that? Bigger afternoon storms and showers return to everyone starting Sunday through next Thursday, Many locations will receive 2-3 inches of rain (if not more).
Hanna threatens Texas; Gonzalo weakening; more trouble brewing in tropics
As of 5 pm, the National Hurricane Center said Hanna was located about 195 miles east of Corpus Christi, Texas. A tropical storm warning was in effect from the mouth of the Rio Grande to San Luis Pass, Texas, and a tropical storm watch was in effect from San Luis Pass to High Island, Texas. The government of Trinidad and Tobago has issued a Tropical Storm Warning for Tobago and Grenada. The government of St. Lucia has canceled the Tropical Storm Warning for St. Lucia. This has potential for becoming a tropical storm after the weekend and could be in the vicinity of Puerto Rico by Friday next week.
Tropical Depression 5 forms in the Atlantic
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. The National Hurricane Center says Tropical Depression 5 has formed in the Western Atlantic Ocean. Currently, it is moving in an east, northeast direction with 35 mph sustained winds. The storm poses no threat to the U.S. as it is located 245 miles west southwest of Bermuda and is headed away from the East Coast of the United States. The system is expected to move near or just northwest and north of Bermuda Saturday night and early Sunday. The National Hurricane Center said the system is not expected to strengthen much but it could become a tropical storm later Saturday.
Heres the next area to watch for development in the Tropics
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. A non-tropical area of low pressure has formed over the central Atlantic Ocean a few hundred miles east of Bermuda. Development of this system as a subtropical cyclone appears unlikely due to unfavorable environmental conditions, and the low is expected to dissipate in a few days. The formation chance through 48 hours is low at 10 percent. The formation chance through 5 days is equally low at 10 percent. The NHC forecast discussion for the Atlantic describes the unfavorable conditions in the area currently,
