“Thrill a minute,” Smart said dryly on Monday when asked about his team’s status with COVID-19 testing results. Georgia’s final regular-season game against Vanderbilt was canceled after the Commodores’ roster fell below minimum requirements due to COVID-19 problems. Smart wouldn’t say his team will be without any player due to COVID-19 testing. He said “we’re in a good place” with COVID-19 testing but said he’s also wary of changes before the game. Smart said his Bulldogs are facing three opponents: “Cincinnati, Cincinnati and COVID.”He said a season of dealing with the coronavirus pandemic has been stressful.

Kirby Smart gives much credit to first-year Arkansas coach Sam Pittman for helping to make No. Smart and his Bulldogs will be reunited with Pittman when Georgia opens its pandemic-delayed season at Arkansas on Saturday. In four years as Georgia’s offensive line coach, including the 2019 season with the added title of associate head coach, Pittman was a key member of Smart’s staff. After Wake Forest transfer Jamie Newman opted out of the season, Mathis is competing with JT Daniels, freshman Carson Beck and junior Stetson Bennett. Coach Pittman, he was my guy for two years.

4 Georgia on Saturday provided no clarity to the quarterback competition that continues without a top contender. After Wake Forest transfer Jamie Newman announced his decision to opt out on Wednesday, the competition took on a different look. Smart said another transfer, former Southern Cal starter, JT Daniels, and DWan Mathis worked with the first-team offense in the scrimmage. Nobody has really taken charge and taken over. I am under the assumption that that is going to happen, but that is not my decision, Smart said.

ATHENS, Ga. Jamie Newman, the Wake Forest transfer who was the projected starting quarterback for No. 4 Georgia, is opting out of the season to prepare for the 2021 NFL draft. Former walk-on Stetson Bennett, who was Jake Fromms top backup last season, freshman Carson Beck and DWan Mathis are the Bulldogs other quarterbacks. Newman announced in January he would transfer to Georgia for his final year of eligibility. In his statement, Newman thanked Smart for extending the offer for me to be a part of the University of Georgia football program.

The Georgia coach is working to rebuild his offense after the coronavirus pandemic wiped out spring practice. Smarts first two words to reporters following Saturdays scrimmage were Were behind.We have a long way to go, Smart said. The stout defense is expected to carry the team while the offense gains steam. Georgia lost its two leading rushers, DAndre Swift and Brian Herrien from last years team that finished 12-2. The Southeastern Conferences decision to play conference-only, 10-game schedules means the Bulldogs wont play state rival Georgia Tech.

"That's what every receiver dreams of,'' Cager said Monday of his career-best game. Despite missing Georgia's win over Kentucky with shoulder and ribs injuries, Cager leads the Bulldogs with 26 catches for 377 yards and four touchdowns. "Some of those plays Cager got, they weren't featured Cager plays,'' Smart said Monday.

Georgia continued its recent hot streak against Florida going, dominating statistically and turning back the Gators 24-17 on Saturday at TIAA Bank Field. The win pushed the Bulldogs to 7-1 and 4-1 in the SEC and vaulted them to the top spot in the East. Trask played well for Florida, finishing 21 of 33 for 257 yards and scoring passes to Swain and Van Jefferson. The Bulldogs have beaten Florida three straight games in the streaky series, following a pattern. Florida won three straight from 2008-10; Georgia won the next three.

Both teams are in town days in advance of Saturday's matchup in the TaxSlayer Bowl, it will be only the second all-time meeting of the two teams. With temperatures in the 70s as the Bulldogs opened their first open practice Monday morning, the mood was light. “It’s all about getting that focus back and working hard and getting back into it.”After the morning practice, the TaxSlayer Bowl treated the Bulldogs to a fishing outing in St. Augustine. On Tuesday after both teams practice, they will be treated to receptions at the host hotels. The TaxSlayer Bowl has more activities planned each day, including a visit to Mayport Naval Station on Wednesday, golf outings a visit to Wolfson Childen's Hospital on Thursday and pep rallies on Friday.
