The Gainesville Police Department responded around 7:30 p.m. to the crash at West University Avenue and Northwest 17th Street, near UF’s Fletcher Hall. Police said a Honda Civic traveling east on West University Avenue and a Honda Accord attempting to turn south from westbound West University Avenue collided. Police said the Civic then skidded sideways, striking a pole and five pedestrians -- all UF students. Later that night, one of the pedestrians -- Sophia Lambert, a 19-year-old from Miami -- died, police said. The statement said the university is providing counseling services, outreach and other support for the students and communities affected.

A woman and a 3-month-old baby were killed late Friday night in a shooting in a Northeast Gainesville neighborhood, police said. According to the Gainesville Police Department, officers responded to multiple 911 calls about shots being fired on NE 17th Drive and found Kevi Ellis, 26, still shooting. Police said they found a woman dead from multiple gunshot wounds and found the infant dead from a gunshot wound to the head. Ellis was taken in for an interview and later charged with two counts of homicide and one count of attempted homicide. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact GPD detectives at 352-393-7670.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Emails circulating within African American churches throughout Gainesville contain an alleged warning from the NAACP that white supremacists were coming to the area to kidnap black men and hang them, according to the Gainesville Police Department. GPD immediately consulted with federal authorities, including the FBI, and confirmed that the threat and the emails are not authentic. The exact same email was circulated throughout the African American community in Atlanta several months ago. The NAACP said they were not aware of any such threats and had issued any warning. “GPD takes any threats such as these extremely seriously and will continue to partner with local and federal law enforcement agencies to protect and serve our neighbors in the Gainesville community,” according to a release Friday morning.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – A 13-year-old boy died and another teen suffered life-threatening injuries in a crash Sunday in Gainesville involving a stolen vehicle. The traffic crash happened about 5:15 p.m. on Northeast 25th Street near Northeast 4th Avenue, according to the Gainesville Police Department. Police said the two teens were riding in a Ford Taurus heading south on Northeast 25th Street at a “very high rate of speed” when a stolen scooter cut them off. A 17-year-old boy who was also in the vehicle was taken to UF Health Shands Gainesville with life-threatening injuries. GAINESVILLE, Fla. - A woman was arrested this week on a warrant charging her with child abuse after an 8-month-old at the Cuddly Kids Academy suffered injuries last week, the Gainesville Police Department announced Wednesday afternoon. Police said they were called about 4:30 p.m. Thursday to the day care on Southeast Fourth Avenue after the parent of the child arrived to find injuries on the child's face. The initial investigation indicated the injuries may have been caused by another child, but upon reviewing the surveillance footage, it was discovered day care worker Erica Hall, 37, caused the injuries, according to the Police Department. As officers were reviewing the footage, the Police Department said, Hall ran from the premises and could not be located. A warrant was issued Friday for her arrest, and Hall turned herself in Tuesday to the Alachua County Sheriff's Office and was booked into the Alachua County jail, the Police Department said.

According to police, 31-year-old Scott Michael Henson, of Gainesville, was arrested after police held a press conference highlighting the success of their sting, which was covered by local media. The arrest was announced after News4Jax found that two of the other men arrested in the sting had ties to Santa Fe College in Gainesville. Of those arrested, many remained in jail Wednesday with bond amounts ranging from $75,000 to $300,000. Investigators said that Stamper also talked with agents posing as a 14-year-old girl and arranged to meet for sex. He also agreed to bring the girl Skittles and had the candy with him when he was arrested.
