1 dead in crash on I-95 near Florida-Georgia border
NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. – A Georgia man is dead after an accident about 10 p.m. Friday night on Interstate-95 just before the Florida-Georgia border, according to Florida Highway Patrol. A 41-year-old man driving an SUV in the far right lane at mile marker 381, just south of the Florida-Georgia line, came to stop in a northbound lane. That’s when a second vehicle, driven by a 37-year-old man with a 59-year-old passenger inside, crashed into the stopped car. The second car’s driver and passenger, both from Canada, sustained minor injuries. The FHP says it’s unclear at this time why the SUV came to an abrupt stop on the highway.

Literally stretching from Los Angeles, east along I-10 to Jacksonville will be a swath of light to moderate rains and showers. And there will be a fine line between the heavier rains (mainly north of Jacksonville) and just some scattered showers and some sunshine south of Jacksonville. Friday temperatures will be very mild, starting around 60° around sunrise and then into the low 70s south of Jacksonville. Those northeasterly winds will then surge southwards into Florida during the sunrise hours on Saturday. By the evening hours, northeasterly winds coming onshore will knocked down temperatures back into the 50s.
Fans, businesses gearing up for scaled back Georgia-Florida festivities
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Fans started to arrive in the River City ahead of the Florida Georgia game on Saturday. There will be no RV City, no Bold City Bash and no tailgating at city-owned or managed parking lots. Several fans who usually camp in RV City parked in a nearby private lot this year. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – While the Georgia-Florida game is still a go, it is going to look and feel very different this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, there will be no tailgating in city-owned and city-managed parking lots. But local business owners and private lots around the stadium are gearing up for tailgaters. River City Railway on East Adams Street is a private railcar tailgating area and some fans could already be seen there Thursday morning. At his 90-minute rally in Macon, Georgia, Mr. Trump criticized NBC News after his contentious town hall with journalist Savannah Guthrie. "Can you imagine if Joe Biden was treated like Guthrie treated us, not me, it's us," Mr. Trump said. At a White House event in Fort Myers, Florida, for seniors earlier Friday, Mr. Trump said was "well aware" that "America's 54 million seniors have borne the heaviest burden of the China virus." Glynn County could ban booze on beach around Florida-Georgia game
BRUNSWICK, Ga. – A coastal Georgia county is considering banning alcohol from a popular beach on the weekend of the Florida-Georgia football game in nearby Jacksonville, Florida. The Brunswick News reports that the Glynn County Commission will consider the alcohol ban on East Beach on St. Simons Island on Nov. 6 and 7. The Nov. 7 game typically draws crowds to what's been dubbed “frat beach” on the coastal Georgia island. Glynn County police will be on the beach, as well as Georgia State Patrol and Department of Natural Resources officers. Glynn County Police Chief Jay Wiggins said officials are still discussing how police might enforce the ban.

74-year-old pilot killed in plane crash north of Hilliard
HILLIARD, Fla. – A pilot died when a single-engine, homebuilt plane crashed Monday afternoon in a wooded area near the Florida-Georgia border, authorities said. The FAA said the pilot was the only person aboard the plane, which was registered out of Palm Coast. While it’s too early to say wind played a factor in the crash, Booth said it can’t be ruled out. Booth said if the plane caught on fire after the crash, that’s a sign the plane was not out of fuel. NTSB is investigating the September 21, 2020 crash in Hilliard, FL, involving an RV-8 aircraft.
Floridas COVID-19 checkpoint on I-95 finally closed
Nearly four months after Floridas Department of Transportation set up a checkpoint on Interstate 95 at the Florida-Georgia border to screen for people coming from New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, the state has quietly closed the checkpoint. About five weeks ago, FDOH closed a similar checkpoint east of the Florida-Alabama border as part of Gov. Ron DeSantis starting the second phase of a COVID-19 economic recovery plan, but a similar checkpoint on I-95 remained open even after Floridas growth of coronavirus cases exceeded those in the greater New York area. Cards were handed out with information about what people should do if they exhibit fever, cough, or shortness-of-breath symptoms attributed to COVID-19 while in isolation. The state didnt say when the checkpoint at I-95 closed, but when News4Jax noticed it was no longer there on Monday, FDOH confirmed the checkpoint had been discontinued.
JU researcher sets off to tag, track white sharks off Florida, Georgia coasts
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The shark research group OCEARCH embarked on its 37th expedition right off our coast on Thursday. Now is the time of year when white sharks concentrate around the Florida-Georgia area to forage on right whales. National scientists will join forces with the Jacksonville University-based OCEARCH team on a three-week survey between Brunswick and Savannah Georgia. White sharks tagged last year close to Nova Scotia have been tracked close to the Florida coast. JU Professor Dr. Bryan Franks plans on tagging new sharks with satellite tracking devices to learn more about their movements and behavior.
Generator fire causes fireball in RV City
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jacksonville Fire and Rescue responded to a fire in RV City, a popular tailgate spot ahead of the Florida-Georgia game, just after 7 p.m. on Thursday. JFRD said a generator sparked the fire that spread to a personal RV. No one was injured and the fire was quickly extinguished. Florida, Georgia fans roll into RV City, ready to start the party
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Florida-Georgia game is just a few days away and on Tuesday, fans began flooding RV City to set up their campers. Spirits were high as the gates to RV City opened at 8 a.m. Tuesday. The Mcveighs said theyve been setting up in RV City for nearly four decades. "We get along good, weve met some really nice folks down here, some of my best friends are Florida fans," Clark said. Entrance to RV City is on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Landing demolition will force Florida, Georgia fans to party elsewhere
For many Gators and Bulldogs fans, the place to party before, during and after the game used to be the downtown Jacksonville Landing. But since the longtime landmark along the St. Johns River is being demolished, the sports complex area, which includes RV City, will be hosting all the action. "We enjoyed going down there," Bulldogs fan Randy Stone, who came into town from Tifton, Georgia, told News4Jax on Monday. RV City will open Tuesday, but recreational vehicles were already lined up Monday, eager to get in. The first campers there will be the first to pick out their parking spot Tuesday morning when the RV City gates open.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Florida-Georgia football game is staying in Jacksonville through at least 2023. This year, Jacksonville will put on the Bold City Bash the night before the Nov. 2 game. The Florida-Georgia game has been extended through 2023 with an option to extend to 2025. The future of the game in Jacksonville has been a hot-button topic, more so in recent years. The financial incentives to keep the game in Jacksonville make it worth it for the programs.
