There are many words that could be used to describe WJXT Chief meteorologist, George Winterling — a veteran of the United States Air Force. A beloved husband and devoted family man. A pioneer in the field of TV meteorology.

1992....the year Bill Clinton was elected president, the Olympic games were held in Barcelona, Jay Leno debuted on the Tonight Show and John Gaughan and Mary Baer joined the team at WJXT-TV, Channel 4 in Jacksonville.

In an official proclamation, Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry has declared May 31, 2023, as Mary and John Day! Today is Mary and John's last day at News4JAX.

We are celebrating Mary and John, who have spent the last three decades on your TV. 30 years of telling your stories, sharing what's going on in your neighborhood and more. Now it's time for us to hear their stories.

I'd like to share with you a couple of my John and Mary memories. I want to start with some of the very first comments that former news anchor Deborah Gianoulis and I made about Mary 30 years ago--and we stand by them today. "Mary Baer has fit into our newsroom from the first day she got here. It seems like she's been here all along."

Mary Baer and John Gaughan have belonged to this community for 30 years, and it's a big sacrifice to work until 11:30 at night -- or, come into work -- when you're telling everyone else to shelter in place during a storm. Also, to share, in the joy and the sadness in the stories you tell. They have served you so well. But Mary and John also belong to us here at News4JAX, as colleagues and friends. The conversations that happen OFF AIR -- have created relationships that will last a lifetime.

John Gaughan has been delivering weather forecasts in Jacksonville for more than 30 years. While he is retiring from WJXT after starting at The Local Station in 1992, here's a look back at his time at Channel 17, which WJXT's parent company, Graham Media Group, now owns.

The Starke Police Department said damage and debris was left behind following Wednesday’s afternoon storms.

Areas of St. John’s County have been placed under a coastal flood watch, which could mean high tides and flooding in spots, posing a potential threat to sand dunes.

Tropical Storm Mindy formed Wednesday evening in the Gulf of Mexico, prompting forecasters to issue a tropical storm warning for part of the Florida Panhandle.

Around the time an EF1 tornado swept through Jacksonville’s San Jose area during Tropical Storm Elsa, a group of CrossFitters would have been jogging during their afternoon class, but they said a single text may have saved their lives.

The Weather Authority is keeping a close eye on a line of thunderstorms just to the west of the I-75 corridor where a severe thunderstorms warning has been issued for Hamilton, Suwannee, and Clinch County until 3:00 PM EDT. These storms have a history on strong winds and hail.

This past weekend was the first “official” weekend in spring and it felt nothing like it, all thanks to a nor’easter sitting right off our coast. “It was quite the nor’easter weekend, it felt and seemed much more like winter, than the first weekend of spring,” Weather Authority Chief Meteorologist John Gaughan said. You might recall the beautiful blue skies and warm temperatures around 80?”Peak Wind Gusts along the NE FL & SE GA coastal areas from the weekend Nor'easter as of 7am Mon. At the top of the report, Jacksonville at Buck Island reached a peak wind gust of 52 mph Sunday and Huguenot Park reached 51 mph. The Jacksonville International Airport reached a peak wind gust of 43 mph Sunday afternoon and St. Augustine Beach recorded a gust of 45 mph Saturday.

The tornado watch has been canceled in the Georgia counties of Brantley, Camden, Charlton and Glynn. The tornado watch continues until 6 p.m. in the Florida counties of Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Clay, Duval, Gilchrist, Nassau, Putnam, St. Johns and Union. The National Weather Service has canceled a tornado warning for Clay and Duval counties. The watch continues for Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Clay, Duval, Nassau, Putnam, St. Johns and Union counties in Georgia. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – We don’t expect severe weather, but starting Tuesday afternoon and sticking around until early Wednesday morning, we expect disruptive and inconvenient weather, including passing showers, gusty winds and a significant drop in temperatures. “We are calling it a Weather Authority Alert Day Lite as our weather shift is the big story,” said Weather Authority Chief Meteorologist John Gaughan. “It is not about severe storms, it is about a 180-degree turn in our weather -- from afternoon highs in the 80s to afternoon highs Tuesday in the 50s.”Beginning Tuesday afternoon, passing areas of rain will disrupt your afternoon and evening plans. We don’t expect thunderstorms, but we may see some traffic issues with wet roadways. Tuesday we will only top out in the 50s, so our daytime temperatures will drop 20-25 degrees in 24 hours.

Therefore, Friday will be a Weather Authority Alert Day due to inconvenient, chilly rain that will stick around much longer than we’d like. We expect rounds of disruptive rain to push through starting very early Friday morning and persist for most of the day. During this time we may see a few thunderstorms and a slight chance for severe storms from Valdosta to Waycross to Brunswick. “The big story here is not about severe weather. at 5 am this should be just a pause as another round of downpours will develop before 8amSlight chance of a severe storm around 8am

The National Weather Service is investigating reports of damage and hail in the wake of Monday’s storms. Storm reports show emergency managers in Columbia County have reported possible tornado damage in two spots, both in Lake City. “I’m just glad it didn’t come up towards my house.”AdIn addition to the damage, there were multiple reports of hail. There were additional reports of hail in St. Johns County. Notably, there haven’t been any reports from the NWS about a tornado forming in St. Johns County on Monday afternoon.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – As the Weather Authority Alert continues Saturday, the National Weather continues to watch to severe storms track east northeast across Northeast Florida. A Tornado Watch is in effect for Union, Putnam, St. Johns and Flagler counties until midnight. For the differences between a Tornado Watch and a Tornado Warning, see the graphic below. It wasnt always a single cell, but, man, the lightning was just frequent and intense. A lot of dry air surrounding that thunderhead, and that led to a lot of static electricity and, of course, the form of static electricity we see in the skies of red this time of year is a form of lightning.

There was also severe flooding nearby in Neptune Beach, where the Police Department placed barricades along First Street. Hank Watson said Jacksonville Beach firefighters had to come to her aid. The category 1 storm is moving away from Jacksonville's coast at 7 mph with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph. The first coast will see a high risk of rip current and high surf Monday as Humberto moves off the Atlantic coastline. Your 11 AM (9/16) Tropical Update - Hurricane #Humberto will continue to move ENE away from the area. It is getting stronger feeding off warm water and reduced shear and it shows in its satellite appearance looking more like a hurricane. Forecasters expect the storm to stay offshore of Florida's eastern coast, so a tropical storm watch is no longer in effect for the state.

With the current forecast track for Potential Tropical Cyclone 9, our local forecast actually improves for the weekend. A Tropical Storm Warning remained in effect for the Northwestern Bahamas, excluding Andros Island. A Tropical Storm Watch was issued Friday for part of Florida's East Coast, from Jupiter Inlet to the Flagler-Volusia County line. Tropical storm conditions are possible in the watch area on the Florida peninsula by Saturday. This graphic shows what the Global Forecast System model predicts for this system over the weekend.

News4Jax chief meteorologist John Gaughan is tracking Dorian as it expands and approaches our part of the state.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Weather Authority is tracking a tropical wave drifting towards the Bahamas and the National Hurricane Center gives it a 30% chance of development this week. Locally we expect this tropical wave to increase our rain chances starting on Wednesday, subsequently lowering our temperatures. Wind gusts will most likely not be an issue- we have seen stronger wind gusts within our afternoon thunderstorms than we will see with the tropical wave. Our rain chances will increase Thursday as the wave is nearby. Our chances for rain will decrease as we head into the weekend and the tropical wave pulls further away from us.
