A Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department engineer has been charged with a misdemeanor count of petty theft after investigators said they confirmed he had stolen items from several Winn-Dixie stores -- sometimes while on duty.

Current educators and school district staff must present their valid Nassau County employee ID and a copy of their pharmacy insurance card at their scheduled appointment time and location.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – City leaders are still looking for solutions to food deserts. On Thursday, Jacksonville City Council members and other organizations met virtually to explore some short- and long-term solutions to food deserts, or areas with less or no access to fresh, healthy food. One of those areas is the New Town neighborhood near Edward Waters College. “This is a food desert without fresh fruit, fresh vegetables,” said Marcia Ellison, a 19-year resident of the New Town neighborhood. Another initiative is food pantries like the one by Feeding Northeast Florida that’s open twice a month right outside of the New Town neighborhood.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – As Walmart locations in Jacksonville start offering COVID-19 vaccines, public transportation officials are working to adjust routes to make sure people can get to their appointments. Since mid-January, the state-run vaccination clinic at Regency Square Mall has been the primary vaccination site in Duval County. A bus stop was also added to the front of the vaccination site. AdAccording to JTA, 211 people have used the routes to get to the state-run vaccination site and 20 people used JTA services to get to the pop-up site on the Northside of Jacksonville last week. Southeastern Grocers is preparing to administer 8,100 doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine throughout Florida, the supermarket company announced Thursday. Beginning Feb. 11, Southeastern Grocers will start giving COVID-19 shots to eligible recipients at select Winn-Dixie, Harveys Supermarket and Fresco y Más locations. The shots will be for health care workers, residents and staff of long-term care facilities, and people age 65 and older while supplies last. Those with health insurance must provide their health insurance card during their scheduled appointment, and those without insurance will need to present a valid driver’s license or social security card. Southeastern Grocers said that in the coming months, it will also provide additional COVID-19 shots at pharmacy locations and will coordinate future drive-thru clinics to administer vaccinations in additional underserved communities as availability expands.

CVS, Walgreens, Winn-Dixie, Walmart, Sam’s Club and Costco are among the big-name companies will soon join Publix in getting COVID-19 vaccines out into senior citizens and others who qualify for a shot. Walgreen’s website says the CDC is working with their pharmacies to optimize vaccine access in areas with a high social vulnerability index score. The number of participating pharmacies and the allocation of vaccines is expected to grow as drug makers increase production. It is allowing state and local governments to receive additional federal dollars to cover previously incurred expenses relating to the pandemic. Participating are major chains like CVS, Walgreens and Rite Aid, big box stores such as Walmart and Costco, and supermarket pharmacies.

Many others are still having problems, particularly those seniors who don’t have transportation or can’t get out of the house. “My doctor’s appointment is in March, so I was going to hope he has the vaccine (by then),” Stephens said. There is also the question of seniors who can’t leave the house, those who are homebound. Now that the state has taken over vaccine distribution in Jacksonville, that service for vaccine help is no longer available.

NEPTUNE BEACH, Fla. – Three hundred military families in need will be getting a little extra help for the holiday’s thanks to Winn-Dixie, the Greater Jacksonville USO and current and former Jaguars players. Winn-Dixie, Jaguars' defensive end Lerentee McCray and former Jaguar Drayton Florence donated 300 turkeys for a drive-thru food distribution Tuesday night in Neptune Beach. For Tuesday’s event at the Neptune Beach Winn-Dixie in Penman Plaza, the USO invited 300 active-duty and veteran families to receive the turkeys and other holiday meal essentials. The event was by invitation only and was not open to the public. Because of the ongoing pandemic, participants were encouraged to wear protective equipment during the drive-thru event.

Winn-Dixie, in partnership with Duval County Public Schools and Florida Blue, will offer free flu vaccines for all county teachers and other DCPS employees at a drive-up clinic from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends everyone six months and older get a flu vaccine every year. The company had initially rejected a mask mandate, saying it did not want to put its workers in the position of having to ban customers. But in a statement, the company headquartered in Jacksonville, Florida, said its position had “evolved” and it wanted to more clearly emphasize the importance of its customers', workers’ and communities’ safety. Still, the company said state and federal officials should be responsible for issuing mask requirements.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Chick-fil-A sauce lovers, rejoice! Chick-fil-A is entering the grocery business with bottles of its signature and Polynesian sauces, CNN reports. Starting in April, the 16-ounce bottles will be sold in Florida at Publix, Target, Walmart and Winn-Dixie stores. It’s the first time that Chick-fil-A will sell its products in retail stores, CNN reports. All proceeds from the bottle sales will go to Chick-fil-A’s scholarship fund for employees.

Jacksonville-based Southeastern Grocers said Feb. 4 it agreed in principle to take over five Lucky’s Market locations in Florida. Southeastern Grocers will open Winn-Dixie supermarkets at closing Lucky’s stores in Gainesville, Melbourne, Fort Myers, Naples and Lake Mary. Lucky’s, which is reorganizing under Chapter 11 bankruptcy laws, initially intended to keep the Melbourne store open. Previously, Aldi agreed to take over six Lucky’s stores, while Publix Super Markets Inc. agreed to take over leases at five properties including the Lucky’s store in Neptune Beach. Lucky’s said Feb. 4 it entered into asset purchase agreements with Southeastern Grocers, Seabra Foods and Hitchcock’s Markets for seven locations in Florida.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - One person was seriously injured in an industrial accident Friday morning at the C&S Wholesale Grocers distribution center near Baldwin, according to the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department. Firefighters called just after 7 a.m. to the site off Beaver Street which has long been known as the Winn-Dixie warehouse found someone trapped under a large load and needed to be rescued. They managed to pull the individual out and transported him to the hospital and his condition was not reported. C&S released a statement about the accident:There has been an incident in our Jacksonville, Florida facility. At C&S, our employees safety is our priority and we are investigating the cause of this incident.
