JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ Four area girls basketball teams are bound for the third round of the state playoffs. Bishop Kenny, Oakleaf, St. Augustine and University Christian all advanced to Fridayโs third round with victories on Tuesday night. St. Augustine clipped Ponte Vedra for the second time this month with a 43-35 win in 1-5A. And Bishop Kenny pulled off the Northwest sweep with a grind-it-out, 44-39 win over Ribault.
Girls high school basketball playoffs: Six games headline second-round slate
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ Tuesday night is the second round of the girls high school basketball state playoffs. St. Augustine beat Ponte Vedra 47-29 in the regular season, and then edged the Sharks 49-45 in the district championship. The Trojans won 51-50 in OT this season, 44-38 last season, 54-50 in 2019 and 52-39 in 2018. That sets up a rematch of the district championship game, won 46-35 by the Christians. C/F Jaidy Mejia (11.2 ppg) and G Laura Gonzalez (10.2 ppg) lead NFEI.
Heritage Classic between Raines, Ribault more than just a baseball game
Itโs an early season baseball game with only bragging rights on the line. But Raines and Ribault playing under the lights at 121 Financial Ballpark and donning the jerseys of a team from the long-gone Negro Leagues is a big story. The makeup game between the two Northwest Jacksonville rivals โwhich was originally scheduled for Feb. 12 as a preseason scrimmage โ is now an actual regular season game. Thereโs been a renewed focus on the rich baseball history here. That was the same place where the Negro League Red Caps played for three years.
Girls basketball playoffs: Bishop Kenny edges Raines in OT thriller

Bishop Kennyโs 60-55 overtime win over rival Raines headlined the opening round games. The Crusaders (18-9) knocked off Raines in the regional final a season ago to reach the state semifinals. Other winners on Thursday night included Oakleaf edging Lake Mary (66-63) for its first playoff win since 2016. AdIn its first playoff game since 2012, Jackson trounced Maclay 65-18.
Raines, Ribault to play in 2nd annual High School Heritage Classic at 121 Financial Ballpark
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ As part of the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimpโs salute to Black History Month, the club will be hosting the second annual High School Heritage Classic exhibition game between Raines and Ribault high schools at 121 Financial Ballpark. The Raines and Ribault players will wear custom Jacksonville Red Caps uniforms in a tribute to the Negro Leagues team from 1938 to 1942. Throughout the exhibition game, there will be historical references to Negro Leagues players and teams. โPersonally, this is a dream come true,โ said Andrea Williams, the Jumbo Shrimpโs director of community relations. The Raines Vikings defeated the Ribault Trojans 8-4 in the inaugural High School Heritage Classic in February 2020.

Former Ribault star Rennia Davis preseason All-SEC selection for 3rd time
On Tuesday, Davis, a former Ribault High star, was voted as a Preseason All-SEC first-team selection for the third consecutive season, adding to a legacy that has made her among the most accomplished womenโs basketball stars in area history. Davis has started 92 of 94 games during her college career and has career averages of 14.9 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. Only two area players have been selected in the WNBA draft before โ Keystone Heights' Monique Cardenas and Ribaultโs Erica White. Davis is one of the best womenโs basketball players in area history and a selection on the News4Jax All-25 team that honored the top players of the last 25 years. Robert Williams honored as All-Star Athlete
Robert Williams is on the track and football teams at Jean Ribault High School. He is a member of the National Honor Society and is in Ribaultโs Early College Program. Robertโs volunteer work includes attending food drives at St. Paul Baptist Church. Robert currently has a 4.3 G.P.A.
Raines uses defense to crush Ribault in Northwest Classic
Raines and Ribault met in the 51st Northwest Classic on Saturday at Raines. The Vikings used six interceptions, including three by Kyree Hammond, to rout rival Ribault 44-20 in the 51st Northwest Classic on a picture-perfect afternoon at the Graveyard. A muffed kickoff pinned Ribault back at its own 3 on the next drive and Christian McNair intercepted Santana Jackson and walked into the end zone. A bad snap on a punt rolled out of the end zone and led to a safety. And Raines recovered a muffed punt by Ribault that set up a touchdown.
Jacksonville sheriff: Vest saves life of officer shot
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ A police officer was shot Monday morning while assisting the Drug Enforcement Administration in serving a high-risk search warrant in a neighborhood off Moncrief Road, authorities said. The Jacksonville Sheriffโs Office SWAT team member was released from the hospital within hours and is recovering at home, Sheriff Mike Williams said. Williams said the veteran officer was hit several times, but the shots landed on his ballistics vest, and the officer managed to return fire. โWhen you ask for the SWAT team, youโre talking about a high-profile takedown," Jefferson said. The sheriff said SWAT officers spend 20-30% of their on-duty time training to prepare them for high-risk situations.

Former quarterback at Raines & Ribault paralyzed after shooting
SALISBURY, N.C. โ A quarterback at a North Carolina college, who once played at both Raines and Ribault high schools in Jacksonville, has been paralyzed after a shooting in which at least six people were wounded during a party at a restaurant, police said. Livingstone College junior Ryan Williams, 21, of Jacksonville, Florida, was among the victims shot at a Salisbury restaurant early Sunday, said Salisbury police spokesman Greg Beam, who was cited by news outlets. Five other Livingstone students were wounded, and two of them were Williams' teammates, according to police. Three students from Catawba College, which is also in Salisbury, were also injured in the incident, police said. The officers were still outside when the shooting occurred, he said.

On Tuesday, Davis earned SEC Women's Basketball Player of the Week honors as her hot start to the 2019-20 season continued. Davis is one of the best women's basketball players in area history. She led Ribault to three state championships during her decorated career and finished with 2,304 points, second in area history to another former Trojan, and current Ribault coach Shante Stevens (2,780).

Parade celebrates 50th Northwest Classic in Jacksonville
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Before Raines and Ribault high schools took the football field Saturday afternoon for the 50th time in history for the Northwest Classic, hundreds gathered for a parade in Moncrief to show their pride and cheer on their teams. This is, like, one of the biggest parades we've had so far because we're celebrating 50 years of excellence, 50 years of community, 50 years of our youth," said parade coordinator Quen Sams. "It's a big rivalry, and we understand that it's a big family, a neighborhood and one big community." She said for her, the event means she's part of the heritage and embedded history in Jacksonville. "You see alumni come out, you see their children and the legacy of being a Viking, because I'm actually a third-generation Viking," Manning said.
High school football 2019: Five games to watch in Week 7
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A glance at the top high school football games of Week 7. Washington has faced three heavyweights in IMG Academy, Miami Central and Miami Columbus, going 1-2 in those matchups. Ponte Vedra has RB Campbell Parker (434 yards, 3 TDs), QB R.J. Glod (1,245 yards, 10 TDs) and WR Michael Olkiewicz (475 yards, 4 TDs) are tops on the Sharks. Parker (2-2, 1-0) at Baker County (3-2, 1-1)*: A major District 3-5A battle. Raines has played well since a Week 1 blowout loss to Orlando Jones, giving up just 22 points since then.
TOTW: Ribault sweeps Gateway Conference Championship
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ Right now the best high school basketball in Jacksonville is being played on the Northside where Ribault won both the boys and girls Gateway Championship. This was the sixth straight Gateway title for the Lady Trojans. Since losing back to back games at the Martin Luther King tournament earlier this month the boys are on their win streak including an upset of previously unbeaten Wolfson.
