In another indicator of the push to restore pre-pandemic higher education norms, FSU and the University of Florida will hold in-person graduation ceremonies for spring-semester graduates. Both institutions have announced a series of upcoming reduced-capacity commencements that will mark the universities’ first in-person graduation ceremonies since December 2019. The “condensed” graduation programs will make social distancing possible, university officials said in a press release issued Thursday. As with the plan to reintroduce in-person instruction, FSU is leaving open the possibility that the face-to-face graduation ceremonies could change. “There will be no processional, nor recessional, no platform party, and college deans will not be shaking hands with students,” the university wrote in a news release outlining changes from previous in-person graduation ceremonies.

University of Florida men’s basketball player Keyontae Johnson is in a medically induced coma following his collapse on the court during a Saturday game against FSU, USA Today reported. According to he report, Johnson’s grandfather, Larry DeJarnett, told USA Today that doctors hoped to try and bring him out of the coma Monday. Florida said in a statement that Johnson had been successfully transferred to UF Health in Gainesville. Johnson had just dunked in transition before he crumpled to the floor as the team broke its huddle. Johnson, a 6-foot-5 junior from Norfolk, Virginia, averaged a team-high 14 points last season to go along with 7.1 rebounds.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Bobby Bowden continues to recover from a positive test for COVID-19 and Wednesday, he released a statement on his health that included endorsements of President Donald Trump. In a letter posted to social media and emailed elsewhere, Bowden said that he was treated for COVID-19 with Remdesivir, one of the same drugs used to treat the President’s COVID-19. I just went through a battle with Covid-19 and God just want' ready to take me Home yet to be with Him. But thanks to the help of Dr. Michael Forsthoefel and the support of Ann and my children, I beat it. Bowden will turn 91 on Nov. 8, five days after election day.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – After testing positive for COVID-19 this month, Florida State University President John Thrasher and his wife, Jean, have been cleared by the state Department of Health. “I am happy to share that Jean and I were cleared Friday by the Florida DOH after testing positive for COVID-19 earlier this month, and we are resuming many of our regular activities,” the university president posted Monday on Twitter. “We are feeling good and appreciate all the prayers and well wishes!”The university announced Oct. 6 that the Thrashers had tested positive. At the time, John Thrasher, 76, said he was working at home while the couple isolated.

Former Florida State football coach Bobby Bowden was released from a hospital Thursday after being treated for COVID-19. Bowden family friend Kim Shiff said the 90-year-old college Hall of Famer was back home after a weeklong stay at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare. He had received word of the positive test a few days after returning to his Tallahassee home from a lengthy hospital stay for an infection in his leg. Bowden told the Tallahassee Democrat earlier this week that he was “doing good” and expected to be released soon. Bowden coached Florida State for 34 years and is second on the career victories list in major college football with 357, behind only the late Joe Paterno of Penn State.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Former Florida State coach Bobby Bowden has tested positive for COVID-19, he told the Tallahassee Democrat on Monday morning. The iconic Bowden, 90, said that he was the only person in his household who tested positive for the virus. “I don’t feel bad yet, I guess I can loaf around the rest of the week,” Bowden told the newspaper. Bowden retired after the 2009 season and a 33-21 win in the Gator Bowl over West Virginia. Bowden coached for 40 years in major college football, first at Samford, then West Virginia and finally at Florida State.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – As coronavirus cases spike among Florida State University students, the school has decided to cancel spring break next year. In a message to students, Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Sally McRorie announced changes to the school’s calendar which included doing away with spring break in 2021. “The university continues its efforts to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, and we believe these adjustments will reduce the potential for members of the campus community to return to Tallahassee with the virus after traveling during spring break,” McRorie wrote. Tallahassee police said it was one of a dozen large gatherings they broke up over the weekend, including one Sunday where two people were injured by gunfire. Florida State University reported that more than 1,400 students and 26 employees had tested positive for COVID-19 through Sept. 18.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Officials at Florida State University say COVID-19 numbers are starting to improve. So far, the university has identified 1,428 cases since reopening for the fall semester, but in the latest report, positivity rates and case numbers appear to be trending downward. Following a week of more than 400 new cases and a positivity rate of 12.9%, the university’s newly released report shows 178 new cases and a positivity rate of 6.7%. Hecht says most of the students who are testing positive appear to be contracting the virus off campus. In an effort to curb transmission, the university announced students who test positive and break quarantine will face possible suspension.

Florida State coach Mike Norvell will miss an upcoming game against Miami after testing positive for COVID-19, the school announced on Saturday. Deputy head coach Chris Thomsen will handle head coaching duties in Norvell’s absence. “In our most recent round of Covid testing yesterday, I received a positive result after being negative in our previous two tests this week. Deputy head coach Chris Thomsen will handle in-person head coaching duties until I am able to return. At this point, based on our testing this week, we have no reason to believe that the Miami game is in jeopardy.”

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The University of Florida and Florida State University remained ranked among the top 20 public universities in the country Monday, as U.S. News & World Report released annual ratings that have become a closely watched scorecard for colleges. UF tied with the University of California-Santa Barbara for sixth in top public universities, after being ranked seventh last year. UF also was tied for 30th among national universities, the top ranking of Florida public or private schools. The University of South Florida tied for 46th among public universities, while the University of Central Florida tied for 77th and Florida International University was in a tie for No. Among national universities, the University of Miami was tied for 49th, the second-highest ranking in the state behind UF.

Burr said while the board will begin the search process earlier than anticipated and he has no plans to name an interim president. While his contract this year, Thrasher will remain in office until a new president can take the helm. Thrasher also posed a heartfelt message to “the FSU Family,” recounting his long history with the university and career. A special board meeting will be scheduled in the coming weeks to discuss the establishment of a presidential search committee as well as the search process, Burr said. “I assure you that I will continue to work tirelessly with our leadership team to continue FSU’s positive momentum.”

Pointing to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Florida State University Alumni Association announced Friday that it is postponing annual homecoming festivities until spring. The festivities had been scheduled for the week of Nov. 9 to Nov. 14. The association did not immediately announce a spring date. “Homecoming is one of Florida State’s most cherished traditions,” university President John Thrasher said in a prepared statement. “Although we won’t be able to gather this fall, we hope to welcome friends and alumni back to campus and celebrate everything we love about FSU with students, faculty and staff this spring --- one of the most beautiful times of year in Tallahassee.”

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Tailgating wont be allowed for fans at Florida State for the Seminoles home opener next Saturday. The school announced that decision Friday afternoon. Florida State hosts Georgia Tech on Sept. 12 in the opening game of the season. The school didnt expand on if that restriction would stretch past its first home game. Given what is going on throughout the country and the number of COVID cases in Leon County, we have determined that for the safety of all involved we will not allow tailgating for the Georgia Tech game, said FSU athletic director David Coburn.

The Student Senate at FSU voted June 5 to remove its president for statements he made about Black Lives Matter. FSU’s current Student Senate President Ahmad Daraldik grew up in Palestine. “What it simply says is that antisemitic conduct, speech, behaviors, etcetera, have to be treated in an identical manner as racist speech and conduct,” said Rep. Randy Fine, sponsor of the legislation. In an email, FSU said it investigates all complaints, and that student conduct and disciplinary matters are protected by federal and state privacy laws. The Student Senate voted 19-16 last week to remove Daraldik but the vote fell short of the needed two-thirds majority.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Students returned to Florida State University’s campus on Thursday to move out of their dorms, nearly three months after they closed because of the pandemic. While students are moving out, university leaders are continuing to develop plans designed to keep students safe when they return to campus in the fall. When students left for spring break, they didn’t realize it’d be the last time they’d see campus for nearly three months. And the University of Florida has suggested testing wastewater at dorm buildings for virus particulars in order to spot outbreaks. While most students are moving out at FSU, the university told us international students are still living in the dorms since they can’t travel back home.

FSU student Natalie Nickchen, 19, was hit and killed while crossing a busy road near campus after a driver ran a red light. So I've seen how dangerous it is and then when I found out a fellow classmate had gotten killed I just knew I had to do something and start taking action about this,” said FSU student Noelle Enright. It seeks to increase safety at the crosswalk by building either a pedestrian overpass or a tunnel below the road. Just down the street there is already an underpass leading to campus across the same busy road.

Two years after the hazing death of a fraternity pledge, Florida State University President John Thrasher said Thursday a “major culture shift is underway” as a result of university policies and a new state anti-hazing law. People can receive immunity if they call 911 or campus security to report the need for medical assistance during hazing incidents. Thrasher, a former state House speaker and senator, said Andrew’s Law has “definitely made a big difference” on campus. The Tallahassee Democrat newspaper reported the separate suspensions of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity and Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority due to hazing-related incidents. The Democrat reported that Delta Tau Delta was suspended by its national office, while Theta Nu Xi was suspended by the university.

Velazquez-Mascara also testified she was asked to keep Magbanuas kids the night before Dan Markel was murdered, but never told their father, Sigfredo Garcia. No member of the Adelson Family has been charged with a crime and the family denies any involvement in the murder of Dan Markel.

TALLAHASSEE - Defense attorneys for two people charged in the murder of FSU law professor Dan Markel spent Wednesday in court trying to destroy the credibility of the states star witness. They continue to point out the accomplice, Luis Rivera, will spend less than seven years in prison for the murder. Rivera and Sigfredo Garcia, the accused shooter, have been friends for 30 years.
