Young adult killed in early morning car crash in Nocatee
NOCATEE, Fla. โ The Jacksonville Sheriffโs Office is investigating what caused a vehicle to swerve off of the road and into the woods, killing a passenger. A spokesperson for JSO said two young adults were traveling near the intersection of Preservation Trial and Crosstown Drive around 3:20 a.m. when the crash happened. The cause of the crash is under investigation as is whether drugs or alcohol played a factor, which is typical. JSO did not offer any more information. News4Jax requested the crash report.

NOCATEE, Fla. โ St. Johns County deputies said they located the young man who punched an older man in the head Saturday morning during a dispute over a defaced Trump flag in the Nocatee area. The younger man said his actions were in self-defense, telling News4Jax that what the older man told police about the two of them arguing over the profanity on a President Donald Trump sign is true. He said itโs not something he is proud of, but the said he gave the older man warnings before things escalated. โViolence is against everything I believe in," the younger man said. He was obviously an older man.
K9s For Warriors brings doggies to the windows for seniors in Nocatee
Nobody knows that better than the folks at K9 For Warriors, an organization dedicated to training shelter dogs to become service animals for veterans. They were able to share some puppy love with the residents through window visits, while the residents remained in the safety of their own rooms. โItโs a lot of joy, just to know how much the elderly mean to people,โ said an emotional Deidre Strag, a K9s For Warriors trainer. โHeโs hope, heโs love, heโs understanding.โMiranda said the visit was meaningful for the residents. Deputies: 2 bicyclists recovering after crash with suspected drunk driver
NOCATEE, Fla. โ Two bicyclists remain in the hospital after they were hit by a suspected drunk driver, according to St. Johns County sheriffโs deputies. Investigators said Caleb Richter, 20, was speeding when he hit swerved around another car and hit the two cyclists, who were riding on the road legally with traffic. Deputies said Richter, the driver, was detained at the scene and later taken to a nearby church for a field sobriety test. In his arrest report, deputies wrote that Richter was cooperative and admitted to drinking the night before. โWe do our best to be visible and stay as safe as we can, but it only takes one car,โ Wilson said.
Vigil to be held for man found dead in Nocatee area
A vigil will be held Sunday for a 67-year-old man who was found dead Friday morning in Nocatee. The vigil for David Berlin was held from 7 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Timberland Forest Drive and Valley Ridge Boulevard. Berlin, an employee of Firehouse Subs, did not return home after going for a walk about 2 p.m. Thursday in the Timberland Ridge subdivision in the Nocatee area. But he really cared about others more than he did himself, and as I said earlier, it shows and all this love and support,โ said Michael Berlin. The family said they are thankful for the volunteers, community, police and firefighters who took part in the search.

Nocatee water parks among closures in St. Johns County
ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. โ The Nocatee community received a notice over the weekend that the popular water parks and pools in the community will be closed until further notice. Spring Break begins this week in St. Johns County and will extend an extra week as schools remain closed over concerns of the potential spread of COVID-19. The measures come as a second case of COVID-19 was confirmed in St. Johns County on Sunday. The St. Johns County Pet Center. While many public spaces are included in the closures, the release pointed out that beaches, parks, open green spaces, and trails within St. Johns County will remain open as well as the St. Johns Golf Club.
St. Augustine company wins $37M bid to build new Nocatee K-8
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. โ The St. Johns County School Board selected a St. Augustine company Tuesday to build a new K-8 school in Nocatee. STG Contracting Group, submitted the lowest of six bids to build the new school in the fast-growing area of St. Johns County. The new school is expected to bring relief to Palm Valley Academy, another Nocatee K-8 school that is currently about 400 students over ideal enrollment numbers. K-8 School โMM," will be constructed from the existing district K-8 prototype design and construction plans are 98% complete and under review by district staff. The district is also quickly moving forward on two new high schools โ one in the World Golf Village area and another near County Road 210.
Deputies: Woman watched children playing outside in Nocatee, asked to take photos
NOCATEE, Fla. โ Deputies are working to learn more about a woman who watched as children played outside earlier this month in the Nocatee area and asked to take photos of them, the St. Johns County Sheriffโs Office said Wednesday. The grandparent of the children told deputies that the woman then asked to take photos of the grandchildren. After the grandparent told the woman no, the woman became angry and said, โItโs a public street, you canโt stop me,โ before driving off, according to the Sheriffโs Office. Deputies said she has messy shoulder-length brown hair and โwas very unkept.โThe parent of the children told News4Jax that the woman claimed to be a journalist but wouldnโt specify which organization she worked for. News4Jax crime and safety expert Ken Jefferson said the grandparent did the right thing by saying no to the womanโs request to take photos.

At a St. Johns County School Board meeting this week, the district gave an update on the new school that is expected to bring relief to Palm Valley Academy, another Nocatee K-8 school that is currently about 400 students over ideal enrollment numbers. โItโs an aggressive approach,โ said Cathy Mittelstadt, St. Johns County School District deputy superintendent of operations. The new K-8 will be located near Crosswalk at Nocatee, just north of Pine Island Road, on land that was donated by the Nocatee developer. Teen OK after being thrown from golf cart in head-on crash with SUV
The golf cart driver, who was partially ejected from the cart in the crash, was cited for careless driving, according to a crash report. Deputies said the driver of the SUV stopped at an intersection as the golf cart approached, and before the SUV began moving again, the golf cart "suddenly swerved" and hit the SUV head-on in front of a restaurant. Golf carts commonJoanna Brown, who lives nearby, said that Nocatee is known for being a golf cart community. Since those accidents, the sheriff's office said it planned to hold golf cart safety classes. If the golf cart is to be driven on designated roads during darkness, it must be equipped with headlights, brake lights, turn signals and a windshield.

Nocatee meeting focuses on golf cart safety
That's why the Northeast Florida Sheriff's Advisory and the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office discussed golf cart safety at a meeting Wednesday night at Nocatee Crosswater Hall. "Golf carts are only designed to go 20 mph, so you don't want your golf cart to go over 20 mph," Sheriff's Office Cmdr. Golf cart safety was one of the main topics of a state of the county meeting in May in Nocatee. During that meeting, St. Johns County Sheriff David Shoar said golf cart-related accidents were becoming so frequent that he was planning a golf cart safety campaign. As part of the Sheriff's Office's golf cart safety campaign, deputies said they plan to hold golf cart operators classes in the future.

JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. - A manager of the Nocatee Splash Waterpark told News4Jax on Friday that test results show the splash park was not the source of a stomach illness that sickened some children in northeast St. Johns County. The manager sent the test results from the Tolomato Community Development District, which runs the splash park. He said it will be at least two years before a new high school is ready to open. We are very strict and very consistent about hiring teachers for the number of students that are in that school," Forson said. One teacher to 22 students for middle school students and one teacher per 25 students in high school. Forson said elective classes, however, will often have many more students than that ratio, especially in high school.
