The dashboard shows Glynn County as having the highest percentage of residents in Southeast Georgia receiving vaccines, with 25.4% having received at least one shot. Because many dirt roads in Brantley County are impassable after recent heavy rains, the school district canceled classes on Tuesday -- making it a teacher planning day -- and will offer virtual classes for all students on Wednesday. The county’s transportation director will stay in touch with the road department to assess the status of schools for later in the week. “Stay safe and check back here for updates on Wednesday,” according to a Monday morning Facebook post by the Brantley County School System.

With 188 additional cases of coronavirus diagnosed in the last two weeks, Ware County is among the counties of concern identified by the Georgia Department of Public Health. There was an additional death and 11 new cases in the county reported Sunday. On Monday, the DPH reported no new deaths in Southeast Georgia among the 29 statewide, but there were five new cases in both Ware and Glynn counties and four additional cases in Brantley County. While Georgia’s caseload increased by only 752 Monday -- the lowest day in October -- the seven-day moving average remains above 1,300 cases and a two-month downward trend in new infections in the state has flattened. On Sunday, Atlantic Public Schools announced they would remain on virtual education through the end of 2020 as the city’s current daily average shows coronavirus continuing to spread.

The Georgia Department of Public Health reported only three additional deaths Sunday related to COVID-19 making a total of 6,602 since the pandemic reached the state on March 1. The day before there were 63 deaths reported, including two in Glynn County and one in Brantley County. The state Department of Public Health on Sunday reported an additional 1,134 confirmed COVID-19 cases. (Note: There are variations in the day-to-day data reported by the Georgia Department of Public Health. BRANTLEY COUNTY, Ga. An elementary school in Brantley County has closed after multiple teachers tested positive for COVID-19 or had to self-isolate due to possible exposure to the virus. According to a post on the districts website, Hoboken Elementary school closed Friday and will remain closed until Aug. 24. While there are no students at Hoboken Elementary School who have reported testing positive for COVID-19, we have had adults who had to quarantine due to positive test results or exposure, the district wrote in a statement to parents. The plan called for brief school closures if the system had isolated clusters of COVID-19 in certain classrooms or schools. These decisions will be made on a school by school basis.Masks are encouraged but not required in Brantley County schools, according to the districts reopening plan.

The Georgia Department of Public Health on Sunday reported 33 additional coronavirus-related deaths, including three in Southeast Georgia. According to the state Department of Public Health, a total of 4,702 people have died in Georgia since the pandemic began. On Sunday, the state added 1,862 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the statewide total to 237,030 cases. In the six Southeast Georgia counties tracked by News4Jax, 98 new cases were reported Sunday: 39 in Charlton County, 25 in Glynn County, 19 in Ware County, 11 in Camden County, three in Pierce County and one in Brantley County. As of Sunday, the total number of hospitalizations statewide stood at 22,087 59 of which were reported in the last 24 hours.

The Georgia Department of Public Health on Saturday reported 96 additional coronavirus-related deaths, bringing the total number in the state to 4,669. The 7-day average of deaths reached an all-time high of 73 per day on Thursday before beginning to come down. The DeKalb County school district announced Friday that it was delaying athletics, marching bands and cheerleading until the end of September, although the groups will continue to train. High school football teams elsewhere in the state are supposed to start playing on Sept. 4. The Savannah-Chatham County school district said Friday that a football player at Beach High in Savannah tested positive for COVID-19 and the whole team and coaches are in quarantine.

The Georgia Department of Public Health on Thursday reported 82 additional coronavirus-related deaths, including two in Ware County. According to the state Department of Public Health, a total of 4,538 people have died in Georgia since the pandemic began. On Thursday, the state added 2,515 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the statewide total to 228,668 cases. In the six Southeast Georgia counties tracked by News4Jax, 94 new cases were reported Thursday: 47 in Glynn County, 21 in Camden County, nine in Pierce County, eight in Ware County, five in Charlton County and four in Brantley County. The latest deaths recorded in Ware County brings the countys total to 31 deaths.

The Georgia Department of Public Health on Tuesday reported 122 additional coronavirus-related deaths, including seven in Southeast Georgia. Five additional deaths were reported in Glynn County, bringing the county’s total to 52. In Pierce County, an additional death was reported for a total of nine in the county. And an additional death was reported in Brantley County for a county total of six. In the six Southeast Georgia counties tracked by News4Jax, 79 new cases were reported Tuesday: 36 in Glynn County, 18 in Camden County, 17 in Ware County, four in Brantley County, three in Pierce County and one in Charlton County.

On Sunday, the state added 3,169 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the statewide total to 216,596 cases. In the six Southeast Georgia counties tracked by News4Jax, 77 new cases were reported Sunday: 46 in Glynn County, nine in Ware County, eight in Charlton County, seven in Camden County, five in Brantley County and two in Pierce County. The latest deaths recorded in Ware County bring the countys total to 29 deaths. As of Sunday, the total number of hospitalizations statewide stood at 20,628 -- 72 of which were reported in the last 24 hours.

WAYNESVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia Bureau of Investigation on Thursday executed a search warrant at the home of Erik Sparre and his mother, who was found dead last month. Dennis Perry was found guilty of those murders, but a judge overturned that conviction after the GBI reopened the case. Agents continue to work to determine what involvement Erik Sparre had in the Swain’s deaths. “That weekend, my brother was with me.”Despite DNA evidence, Erik Sparre has not been named a suspect in the Swain murders. The words that Head said he recalled were similar to those his family told police that Erik Sparre used in 1986.

Substitute positions are available in several Southeast Georgia counties, according to ESS. ESS, an education staffing company, said there are available positions in nine Georgia counties, including Brantley, Charlton and Ware. According to ESS, available substitute positions include teachers, paraprofessionals, food service employees, custodians, nurses and clerical staff. The Georgia Department of Public Health on Monday reported 11 additional coronavirus-related deaths, including four in Southeast Georgia. On Monday, the state added 2,890 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the statewide total to 170,843 cases. In Glynn County, two additional deaths were reported Monday, bringing the countys total to 22 deaths. An additional death was reported in Ware County to bring the countys total to 20 deaths. In Brantley County, an additional death was recorded for a total of four deaths.

An additional 2,452 cases of COVID-19 were reported Monday afternoon by the Georgia Department of Public Health, bringing the statewide total to 145,575. As of 2:50 p.m. Monday, the state had recorded 3,176 coronavirus-related deaths, an increase of three since Sunday afternoon. In Southeast Georgia counties tracked by News4Jax, 24 new cases were reported Monday in Glynn County, 15 additional cases were reported in Camden County, eight new cases were recorded in Charlton County, seven new cases were reported in Ware County, three new cases were recorded in Brantley County and two more cases were reported in Pierce County. The state admits the total number of hospitalizations is likely an underestimation since it only counted if it was at the time the case was reported to DPH. As of Monday, more than 1.27 million people had been tested in the state, which had a 10.4% positivity rate.

WAYNESVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Kingsland office has responded to a death investigation in Waynesville at the request of the Brantley County Sheriff’s Office, the GBI said Sunday afternoon. The GBI said it is actively investigating the case. No further details were released.

An additional 3,251 cases of COVID-19 were reported Sunday afternoon by the Georgia Department of Public Health, bringing the statewide total to 143,123. As of 2:50 p.m. Sunday, the state had recorded 3,173 coronavirus-related deaths, an increase of five since Saturday afternoon. In Southeast Georgia counties tracked by News4Jax, 33 new cases were reported Saturday in Glynn County, 24 additional cases were reported in Camden County and nine new cases were recorded in Ware County. Charlton County saw four new cases, Pierce County saw three additional cases and Brantley County recorded two new cases. The state admits the total number of hospitalizations is likely an underestimation since it only counted if it was at the time the case was reported to DPH.

An additional 4,689 cases of COVID-19 were reported Saturday afternoon by the Georgia Department of Public Health, bringing the statewide total to 139,872. As of 2:50 p.m. Saturday, the state had recorded 3,168 coronavirus-related deaths, an increase of 36 since Friday afternoon. Of the additional deaths reported Saturday, two were in Glynn County and one was in Camden County. On Saturday in Southeast Georgia counties tracked by News4Jax, 67 new cases were reported in Glynn County, 47 additional cases were reported in Ware County and 18 new cases were recorded in Camden County. Charlton and Pierce counties each saw 11 new cases, while three additional cases were reported in Brantley County.

BRANTLEY COUNTY, Ga. – Brantley County School System said that masks will be optional if in-person education takes place under the plans it is currently developing. This plan is in place so if there’s a time where more restrictions are put into place the schools can implement hybrid learning. Dr. Morgan did acknowledge that this plan is not ideal for most families as it places a hardship on many working parents. Plan 3: School closure requiring virtual school for all students. Blount said she’s concerned with traditional school because of masks especially since her 5-year-old son has reactive airway disease and asthma and masks affect his oxygen intake.

The Georgia Department of Public Health on Monday reported 2,207 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the statewide total to 79,417. It was the second day in a row the state reported more than 2,200 additional cases. In the six Southeast Georgia counties tracked by News4Jax, there had been 1,351 COVID-19 cases and 29 previously reported deaths as of Monday. Since Sunday, Glynn County recorded 14 additional cases, Ware County reported two and Camden, Charlton and Pierce counties each reported one. Another 914 cases of coronavirus were reported Saturday by the Georgia Department of Public Health, bringing the total to 42,132 since the pandemic first showed up in the state in early March. As of midday Saturday, the report shows 1,811 deaths in the state -- and increase of 26 since Thursday. There were no additional deaths reported in Southeast Georgia counties in the last 24 hours, but Ware County saw its cases increase by over 5% with 11 new cases. Three more cases were reported in Brantley County while Glynn County added two cases and Pierce County added one. So far, 453,537 tests have been performed by commercial labs and the state lab.

CAMDEN COUNTY, Ga. – A nursing home in Brantley County is among six long-term care facilities that have reported COVID-19 cases in Southeast Georgia, according to data released Monday by the Georiga Department of Community Health. One resident died after testing positive, the report shows, and three staff members at the nursing home have also tested positive. Nearly 1,000 staff at Georgia facilities have also tested positive for COVID-19. The state said surveyors within the Healthcare Facility Regulation (HFR) Division of DCH have been contacting long-term care facilities for several weeks to provide monitoring and oversight support as part of the State’s response to the COVID-19 public health crisis.

Brantley County on Saturday reported its second death related to COVID-19 as the statewide death toll hit 677, according to the evening data from the Georgia Department of Public Health. Ware County has reported five novel coronavirus deaths and most cases in the area (81) and neighboring Pierce County has reported two deaths and 51 cases. Glynn County has 49 cases but no deaths, Brantley County has two deaths and 18 cases, while Camden County has 28 cases and no deaths and Charlton County has five cases and no deaths. Georgia’s public health agency said on Thursday it’s broadening its definition of who’s eligible for coronavirus testing in the state. As of Wednesday, just over 4,000 tests for the disease had been processed by state labs, compared with nearly 60,000 Georgia tests handled by commercial labs.

After the first three COVID-19 cases were reported Monday in Brantley County, the county reported its first death linked to the new coronavirus Tuesday, according to the Georgia Department of Public Health. Ware County was the Southeast Georgia county tracked by News4Jax that showed the biggest increase, with a total of 37 cases reported Tuesday. There have been a total of five COVID-19 deaths reported in Southeast Georgia counties tracked by News4Jax: three in Ware County, one in Pierce County and one in Brantley County. Fulton County still has the highest number of confirmed cases in Georgia with 1,185, and 39 deaths reported. The small Southwest Georgia county of Dougherty has 56 reported deaths, the most of any county in the state, and 973 confirmed cases as of Tuesday evening.

The first three COVID-19 cases were reported Monday in Brantley County, the only Southeast Georgia that had not yet seen a confirmed case of the new coronavirus, according to the Georgia Department of Public Health. Of the confirmed COVID-19 cases statewide, 101 cases have been reported in Southeast Georgia, with 16 new cases reported Monday night: the three cases in Brantley County (up two cases from Monday morning), 28 cases in Ware County (up six cases), 23 cases in Pierce County (up two cases), 15 cases in Camden County (up six cases) and three cases in Chalton County (up one case). There was no change in the number of cases reported in Glynn County (29 cases). Fulton County still has the highest number of confirmed cases in Georgia with 1,053, and 32 deaths reported. The small Southwest Georgia county of Dougherty has had 44 reported deaths, the most of any county in the state, and 722 confirmed cases.

FOLKSTON, Ga. – A lightning strike caused the Badcock Home Furniture in Folkston to go up in flames Sunday night. Some of their personal belongings, as well as all the inventory of the furniture store, was destroyed. Rikin Patel’s gas station and convenience store next door to Badcock was filled with customers when they heard the lightning. Morgan Smith, 20, was on the bottom step of the pool in her family's backyard in Brantley County, Georgia when she said black spots started to take over her vision.

BRANTLEY COUNTY, Ga. – The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating the heat-related death of a 2-year-old girl. The toddler died Sunday in western Brantley County, near Waycross. According to the GBI, the medical examiner said the toddler died of hyperthermia. A close family friend told News4Jax that the toddler was found in a dryer. "It was just crazy," neighbor David Williams told News4Jax on Tuesday.

BRANTLEY COUNTY, Ga. – A couple were sentenced to prison in the February 2017 death of the woman's 16-month-old daughter, according to the Brantley County District Attorney's Office. The District Attorney's Office said the child's mother, Marley Rena Wilson, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 30 years in prison, to serve 20 years. The girl, who had visible bruising on her stomach, was barely breathing and was taken to an emergency room in Waycross, where she died, according to the Brantley County Sheriff's Office. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called to help investigate the toddler's death, and Wilson and Cutshall were arrested. According to the District Attorney's Office, the couple initially blamed each other before pleading guilty.

BRANTLEY COUNTY, Fla. – Deputies are asking for the public's help locating a 15-year-old boy who's been missing for nearly three weeks, the Brantley County Sheriff's Office announced Thursday. Zachary Seth Fullard was last seen about 1:45 a.m. on March 19 on Central Avenue, just east of Waycross, deputies said. He's described as being 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighing 115 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. Anyone with information about Fullard's whereabouts is asked to call 911 or contact the Sheriff's Office at 912-452-6141 or 912-285-7821.

NAHUNTA, Ga. – A more than 250-acre wildfire that's burning south of Nahunta in Brantley County destroyed one home and damaged two others on Tuesday, officials said. IMAGES: Wildfire burns in Brantley County"As we were going by, my neighbor's house was totally engulfed. The wildfire began as a controlled burn that jumped the fire lines near Britt Sill and Foxwood roads, according to the Georgia Forestry Commission. "We drove by it, watching it burn," Ronnie Newton said. You got wind blowing, you don't light a match and put on dry stuff like it is," Ronnie Newton said.
