Ahead of the fifth day of the Clay County Agricultural Fair, officials from the Clay County Sheriffโs Office and the Clay County Department of Public Safety addressed a litany of challenges faced in the first four, including traffic back-ups, parking lot flooding, unruly guests and preventable health emergencies.
Deputy hit by car while directing traffic in St. Johns County
ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. โ A St. Johns County Sheriffโs Deputy is going to be OK and suffered no major injuries after she was hit by a car Tuesday night. The Florida Highway Patrol crash report shows the deputy was directing traffic around a crash on State Road 16 at Woodlawn Road when she was hit. According to FHP, a 32-year-old Jacksonville man hit the deputy with the passenger side of his vehicle while turning onto Woodlawn Road. The deputy was not transported to the hospital. Plan would surround historic St. Johns County cemetery with commercial buildings
ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. โ St. Johns County officials have proposed a plan to commercialize part of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Cemeteryโs land. St. Johns County officials submitted an application to rezone 12.34 acres of the cemetery land to make room for 54,000 square feet of commercial buildings. Terry Pacetti, whoโs from the same family that Pacetti Road near the church is named after, says heโs not happy about the proposal. โThe idea of commercial development appalls me.โPacetti says heโd like to see the cemetery continue to grow as more Catholics move to the area. News4Jax reached out to county officials to talk about the plan but had not heard back as of Monday evening.
Woman killed in crash involving semi on I-95 in St. Johns County
ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. โ A 63-year-old Georgia woman died Tuesday in a crash on I-95 just south of State Road 16, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Troopers said the woman was traveling southbound on the interstate when her SUV was struck from behind by a semitruck. The woman was taken to a hospital in St. Augustine, where she died, the FHP said. The driver of the semi, a 46-year-old Jacksonville man, was hospitalized with injuries that were described as minor. The Highway Patrol is working to track down witnesses of the crash.
Beloved veterinary surgeon killed in crash with semi in St. Johns County
ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. โ A family is in shock and mourning after Brienne Lemay was killed on I-95 north of State Road 16 late Monday night. The front of the semi, troopers said, hit the motorcycle and Lemay died at the scene. Lemayโs family said they need to see more evidence before they believe Lemay was at fault in the crash. Brian Chandler, Lemayโs eldest brother, said his sister is a beloved veterinary surgeon and pilot with a clean driving record. She was a veterinary surgeon with FCNMHP Her brother Brian said she is beloved and will be dearly missed.
FHP: Teen killed in head-on crash off State Road 16
ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. โ A 17-year-old Clay County boy was killed Friday night in a head-on crash on State Road 16 at Francis Road in St. Johns County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The Middleburg teen was a passenger in a car driven by a 16-year-old boy, also from Middleburg, the FHP report showed. According to the crash report, the 16-year-old driving on State Road 16 about 8:15 p.m. Friday ignored the right of way of a pickup truck at the intersection with Francis Road. The resulting head-on crash killed the 17-year-old passenger of the car and seriously injured the 16-year-old driver. All lanes of SR-16 between I-95 and Pacetti Road were blocked in both directions while troopers investigated the crash.
2 dead, 19-year-old charged in St. Augustine shooting
ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. โ Two people have died after they were shot Tuesday night in the parking lot of a St. Augustine condo complex, according to the St. Johns County Sheriffโs Office. Both victims -- a young man and young woman -- were taken to local hospitals in critical condition and later died, St. Johns County Sheriffโs Office spokesman Chuck Mulligan said. Less than an hour after the shooting, deputies said, the suspected shooter who ran from the scene was found in a retention pond about a mile away near Scheidel Way and North St. Johns Street. Wilson, a former standout football player at St. Augustine High School who had a drug arrest last year, was booked into the St. Johns County jail just before 4 a.m. Wednesday and is being held without bond on a felony homicide and a felony weapons charge. A command center was set up to search for evidence after a deadly double shooting in St. Augustine.
Troopers: Man killed in Clay County wrong-way crash
CLAY COUNTY, Fla. A 44-year-old man is dead after a wrong-way crash involving five vehicles Friday in Clay County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Troopers said the man was driving a car that was heading west in an eastbound lane of State Road 16. FHP said the car struck an SUV, spun out of control and struck two pickup trucks. A fifth vehicle was struck by debris. The driver of the wrong-way car, who lived in Orange Park, was not identified by troopers.
3-year-old girl drowns in Clay County pool
A 3-year-old girl died two weeks ago after she was found unresponsive in her familys swimming pool, according to the Florida Department of Children and Families. Clay County deputies said the child was pulled from an above-ground pool at a home off State Road 16 west of Penny Farms. This was the third child drowning in Northeast Florida this year. A 2-year-old child drowned in an above-ground pool in Nassau County in June and a 5-year-old was found face down in a bathtub in Alachua County in January. Florida loses more children under the age of 5 to drowning than any other state in the nation.
SJC: Pedestrian struck and killed by tow truck on State Road 16
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. A young woman died after being struck by a tow truck on State Road 16 in St. Johns County late last night, according to Florida Highway Patrol. Troopers say the tow truck was traveling eastbound, just west of Collins Avenue when the crash happened. FHP reports the 18-year-old woman was tending to an animal on the road when she was hit. She died at the scene. No charges are pending.
3 vehicle crash blocks I-95 in St. Johns County for hours
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. โ Hours after a pileup involving two tractor-trailers and a pickup truck pulling a trailer, Interstate 95 at State Road 16 has fully reopened. The northbound lanes were blocked from County Road 207 to State Road 16 from before dawn until almost noon after the crash and a resulting 100-gallon diesel fuel spill, causing a massive traffic backup in St. Johns County through rush hour and beyond. Then materials cleaned up from the wreck caught on fire, causing the highway to close again for another 45 minutes. According to the FHP report, a big rig rear-ended a slow-moving big rig in front of it just about 5:30 a.m. Then a pickup truck struck the rear of the second trailerWith six miles of I-95 closed for more than six hours, St. Johns County deputies diverted I-95 northbound traffic onto C.R. Once the wreck cleared, truckloads of sand were trucked onto and spread on the area affected by the fuel spill.
Parents raise traffic concerns after student hit in front of Clay High School
GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. - Before the sun rose over Green Cove Springs on Tuesday morning, a Clay High School student was hit by a car as they walked across State Road 16 to school. Students and parents said the student is OK, but the incident drew strong reactions from parents who said recent changes at the school may affect student safety. Roberts said last year, there was a resource officer who stopped traffic on State Road 16 when the buses exited the school. The Sheriff's Office said before a new school safety law and a new police force took over as school resource officers, a Clay County deputy handled traffic control in front of the schools. Before the Stoneman Douglas Act, the Clay High deputy would observe traffic control from the front of the school using his patrol vehicle's emergency lights.
FHP: Man killed in crash on State Road 16 in Clay County
CLAY COUNTY, Fla. - A 36-year-old driver was killed Monday evening in a crash on State Road 16 at Sunset Avenue in Clay County. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a Jeep Wrangler headed west on State Road 16 crossed into the oncoming lane and hit a Mazda Protege being driven by Joshua Broadway, of Palatka. Broadway was taken to Orange Park Medical Center with critical injuries and died at the hospital. The 47-year-old driver of the Jeep was not hurt, and charges are pending. Fiery Green Cove Springs crash kills two
GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. - Florida Highway Patrol responded to a crash in Clay County on State Road 16 at Blanding Boulevard just after 5 a.m. Saturday. According to FHP, the driver of a Dodge Stratus attempted to make a left-hand turn onto Blanding Boulevard when a pickup truck slammed into it. The driver and passenger in the Dodge were both killed in the crash. The driver of the pickup truck suffered minor injuries. All lanes of State Road 16 are still blocked off in the area as FHP investigates.

Boil water notice canceled in Green Cove Springs
GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. โ A precautionary boil water notice issued for parts of Green Cove Springs after a contractor damaged a city water main has been canceled. The water main was at the intersection of U.S. 17 and State Road 16, city officials said. The notice applied to water customers at:Speedway and Cove Plaza at the corner of U.S. 17 and SR 16Elks Lodge, Hickory Grove Baptist Church and Day Care4630 County Road 209 South Rolling DieThe water had to be shut off while repairs were made to the water main, and after water flow was restored, samples had to come back clear of bacteria before officials could lift the boil water notice. The notice went into effect at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday and was lifted Friday. City water is safe to drink, officials said.
Single-engine plane lands on SR 16 in Union County
UNION COUNTY, Fla. โ An elderly pilot made an emergency landing on State Road 16 at the Bradford-Union county line on Monday afternoon, according to the Union County Sheriff's Office. They said the pilot told them the plane was running out of gas. Channel 4 was told Momberg put the 1946 Ercoupe 415C down on State Road 16, not far from Florida State Prison. The plane was moved by authorities to an area away from the road. It was uncertain if the plane would be refueled or put on a wrecker and hauled away.
