Erik Williams survived 25 rounds over three hours Monday morning to win his third straight First Coast Spelling Bee. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Two titans of terminology traded words Friday morning in the finals of the First Coast Spelling Bee. The crown stayed with Erik Williams, an 8th grader from St. Johns Country Day School in Clay County, marking his third-straight First Coast Spelling Bee championship. “It’s really scary for everybody but you have to stay relaxed under pressure.”Adding an extra level of challenge to the 2021 First Coast Spelling Bee was the change in format, due to the global pandemic. Williams will now compete for the second time in the Scripps National Spelling Bee when the finals are held near Orlando in July.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – As competitors from all over the world arrive on the First Coast for our biggest week of golf -- The Players Championship -- a PGA Tour champion is focusing attention on a foundation to teaches children golf and positive life skills. Len Mattiace, based in Jacksonville, is using the tournament to highlight his foundation. “The Len Mattiace Foundation is centered around a common theme here in Northeast Florida: the well-being, growth, and safety of our kids in our community,” Mattice said Monday on The Morning Show. “Through the game of golf and a Stop the Bullying Campaign, we are able to positively affect thousands of kids close to home.”The foundation helps introduce children from all walks of life to the game through The First Tee of North Florida. Mattiace is hosting the Rolls Royce Players Party a fundraiser for the foundation, at 6 p.m. FridayAdTickets and sponsorships are available by visiting the foundation’s website.

Highs will sit in the mid to low 80s with partly sunny skies and a 20%-30% chance for showers. Right now the launch is a go and will take off at 7:27 p.m. You can catch the launch live on Channel 4. By Sunday evening a cold front will move in from the northwest leaving us with cooler air come Monday morning. Monday morning those across SE GA could see lows in the upper 40s and low 50s across NE FL. Thanks to the passing cold front we will keep the fall-like weather with daily highs in the upper 60s low 70s and lows in the mid to low 50s through the next week.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Eta was barely handing onto tropical storm strength as it was moving over Jacksonville at 10 a.m., according to the National Hurricane Center. As the NHC put the center of the storm 10 miles southwest of Jacksonville and it was moving north-northeast at 15 mph. By 1 p.m., the storm’s sustained winds were down to 40 mph as it was moving off the coast near Fernandina Beach and moving to the north-northeast at 15 mph. By 4 p.m. Eta was 90 miles south-southwest of Charleston, South Carolina. Greater Jacksonville was forecast to see gusts up to 40 mph and bands of tropical rain, but winds nor rainfall didn’t reach near those totals for most of the area.

The sunny skies and upper 80s hold strong through Friday afternoon, but the temperatures tumble Friday night. Expect a sunny, breezy, crisp day only warming into the low 70s. Temperatures will turn chilly quickly Saturday night, diving down into the low 60s for a chilly start Sunday morning. Sunday won’t be quite as cool, with temperatures warming into the mild low 80s for the afternoon, under partly cloudy skies.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – After a long delay to start the season due to a global pandemic, high school football season kicks off on Sept. 4 around Florida and Georgia. The COVID-19 pandemic has forced quite a few adjustments to schedules in 2020 and many teams have yet to finalize their schedules. Teams that don’t have opponents for a certain date or their schedules have not been provided are marked with a TBA. FLORIDAAll games start at 7 p.m. unless indicated. There will be no district champions declared in 2020, so district games are not identified.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Every area school district has gone back to summer workouts for high school athletes. Right now, high school athletes across the First Coast have returned to campus to begin voluntary work outs following a lengthy list of safety guidelines. Flagler County was the areas final county to resume, with Flagler Palm Coast and Matanzas getting the go-ahead to begin workouts last Monday. In Clay County, athletes returned for workouts on June 22 and this week, high school sports there moved into Phase 2, which allowed athletes to transition from outdoor-only workouts to indoor workouts. Keep your distance when we are around each other.In St Johns County, athletes returned to campus on June 15 to begin working out.

In celebration of the holiday, the Acosta Bridge was lit up, just one way that Juneteenth was celebrated in the River City. People around the area participated in block parties and community conversation to discuss and learn about what June 19th means. This years Juneteenth celebration has taken on a new light given the recent civil unrest and many companies have closed their offices to observe the holiday. Today Tea Posh Naturals kicked off their three-day celebration of Juneteenth with a block party to bring the community together while supporting black-owned businesses. The celebration of Juneteenth will continue Saturday across Jacksonville.

But there were 25 words that were incorrectly spelled that year, knocking out the other contestants from the 14 counties represented. ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Annika Sorenstam has been retired from golf since 2008, but she’s never been too far from the game. Twelve years ago, Sorenstam’s foundation started the Annika Invitational and that event returns to the First Coast this weekend at the Slammer & Squire. The event for girls between 12 and 19 years old is a big one for junior golfers. At stake in the 54-hole tournament are points for the Rolex AJGA Rankings and the World Amateur Golf Rankings. Bigger than the points, Sorenstam said, is seeing some of the same faces in the area time and again and knowing that the experiences of the event are helping younger women.

Henry teamed up with Pay Away the Layaway to pay off $10,000 at a Burlington store on Monday night in Nashville, Tenn., according to station WKRN. I love doing stuff like that and when I can team up with someone, I’m all for it.” Henry said. Derrick Henry and volunteers from the non-profit organization, Pay Away the Layaway are visiting the Burlington store in Nashville, this Monday, December 23rd at 5:00 pm and paying off over $10,000 worth of holiday layaways for families in the area. His Two All Foundation hosted the Henry Holiday Giveaway at the Yulee Walmart on Dec. 18. Henry has rushed for 1,329 yards and 13 touchdowns this season and made his first Pro Bowl.
