A large and intense storm system is rolling across the Midwest and Southeast, bringing tornadoes, flooding rains and even heavy snow to the region.

The threat of strong to severe storms is increasing across all of Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia.

There are many ways to categorize a hurricane. The storm’s central pressure is one way. The height of its storm surge is another. How much rain it drops is another. And, of course, the strength of its wind is another. But what causes a hurricane to strengthen or weaken? The answer is simple enough, but multifaceted.

When a tropical storm or hurricane affects Florida, boat owners and operators have to worry about more than just their homes and families.

Happy Sunday! Scattered storms have developed along the sea breeze this afternoon and will continue to push inland. A handful of these storms will produce gusty winds, lightning and small hail.

Scattered showers will develop along the front across SE GA then fueled by the sea breeze, pushing west of I-95 late afternoon, or evening. Showers with storms will linger past sunset. Locally heavy rainfall, flooding, gusty wind, and frequent lightning strikes are possible in stronger storms.

Update: Strong storms continue to move inland across Putnam, Southern St Johns and Flagler County this afternoon. Storms are producing heavy rainfall, gusty winds, frequent lightning and pea size hail.

As storms were expected to continue through Sunday, one business on the northside of Jacksonville was still dealing with damage from Saturday’s storms.

Severe storms producing hail, damaging winds and tornadoes, have been quickly moving towards Jacksonville. These storms started in Texas, where numerous tornadoes caused at least one fatality and dozens injured.

Strong to severe storms continue to track east across southeast Georgia this evening.

The Weather Authority tracked 51 storms in just the past two years.

Late Wednesday night the squall line of storms that have been racing eastward along the northern Gulf of Mexico, continues to hold together. This is very unusual, typically we see significant weakening. And we might still, just as the storms are coming through Jacksonville Thursday morning. Even if it does weaken, there will still be a very high possibility of another round of possible thunderstorms Thursday afternoon.

Increasing showers and thunderstorms this afternoon, mainly after 2pm, 60-80 percent. These will fade late tonight with more to come Wednesday and Thursday as tropical moisture spreads across the southeast.

Saturday and Sunday hold the hope for a decent beach weekend, with lots of sunshine, very warm temperatures, a weak afternoon sea breeze to cool beachgoers. Highs both days will again be near 90°.

President Joe Biden will visit FEMA headquarters in Washington D.C. on Monday for a briefing on the Atlantic hurricane outlook and preparedness efforts. Florida is also expected to release new information on storm resources Monday.

The storm prediction center has elevated its forecast for severe weather over Georgia. This would take place Saturday afternoon and evening, where Georgia could see two bands of severe storms.

Very complex weather patter has left many areas of the South cleaning up from moderate to strong severe storms. A tornado watch is in effect west of Jacksonville and these same storms will be moving through NEFL and SEGA by this evening.

Of course, we’ve all heard of tornadoes, hurricanes and snow emergencies -- even if we don’t experience these things, we’re familiar enough with what exactly they entail.
