Northbound Edgewood reopens at train track overpass after crane fire
A day after a crane caught fire and sent flames shooting 40 feet high, possibly damaging the New Kings Road overpass on Edgewood Avenue, News4JAX learned northbound lanes of Edgewood had reopened, while southbound lanes will remain closed until officials can inspect the overpass.
High-speed chase leads to arrest of Clay County man accused of sex crime
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 39-year-old man wanted on a list of charges in Clay County is in custody following a high-speed chase that stretched from Florida into Georgia. Police tried unsuccessfully to halt the vehicle using a PIT maneuver on Lem Turner Road and then Smith hopped onto Interstate 95 North. AdIt wasn’t until the fourth PIT maneuver attempt — this time on I-95 in Georgia — that the chase came to a stop. JSO says man who shot at officer suspected in string of robberies
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man accused of firing shots at a police officer during a traffic stop is suspected in a string of business robberies, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. Less than 30 minutes later, Bruno said, a robbery was reported at a motel on New Kings Road, where a witness gave police a description of a red Toyota RAV4. Seconds later, shots are fired. Luis Rodriguez, 40, was charged with the attempted murder of a law enforcement officer and two counts of armed robbery. “We potentially have six additional robberies that Rodriguez will be charged with,” Bruno said.
Driver charged with DUI after hitting officer investigating deadly hit-and-run
Jacksonville police identified the officer as 20-year Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office veteran Detective Ernest Wilson. “We are grateful for the community’s support as we await further reports on his progress.”JSO said the driver who hit Wilson was arrested on a DUI charge after a roadside investigation. 2 women hospitalized after Soutel Drive shooting, police say
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Two women were hospitalized after a shooting early Sunday morning in Northwest Jacksonville, police said. While police were investigating, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, two women arrived at two area hospitals with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. 80 firefighters worked massive fire at Jacksonville trucking company
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville firefighters are working to extinguish the remaining hot spots from a massive fire in a multi-use building on New Kings Road near the intersection of Gilchrist Road in Northwest Jacksonville. A spokesperson for JFRD said the building was a place of business for a trucking company and held several storage units. Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office closed both lanes of New Kings Road while firefighters are still on scene. Man arrested, accused of running chop shop in Jacksonville
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. During the course of a four-day investigation into an auto theft ring, more than 10 vehicles were recovered and several people were taken into custody, according to a report from the Jacksonville Sheriffs Office. The report states that detectives were investigating the thefts of more than 15 cars from auctions, dealers and shops along New Kings Road. Stephen Harrison, 49, was arrested and charged with five counts of auto theft and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. According to the report, three stolen vehicles were found on the property, which had been reported stolen from Americas Auto Auction Jacksonville on New Kings Road. Investigators determined four other vehicles on the property may also have been stolen but unreported.
Police: JSO cruiser hit by car that ran red light
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office patrol car was hit by another car early Thursday at the intersection of Soutel Drive and New Kings Road, police said. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the officer was headed east on Soutel Drive when a driver headed north on New Kings Road ran a red light and hit the patrol car. The officer and the driver were injured and taken to the hospital. Their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening. Lanes were temporarily closed on Soutel Drive and New Kings Road while JSO completed a crash investigation.
Mother of 2 struck, killed was celebrating her 40th birthday
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A mother of two was out, celebrating her 40th birthday, over the weekend when she was killed in a hit-and-run crash in Northwest Jacksonville, according to family members. “I can’t believe my daughter is gone a couple days after her birthday and it’s not right for my granddaughter to have to graduate without her mother," said Ruby Chavis, Shekeida Sherman’s mother. I miss my daughter.”Alexandria Sherman, Shekeida Sherman’s daughter who will graduate from high school this year, said she is heartbroken over the loss of her best friend. “It’s super sad and heartbreaking,” said Candice Kassab, the owner of the LaVilla Sportsman Club. The LaVilla Sportsman Club is a popular weekend spot that gets busy, and people often have to park across the street and dodge traffic to get there.
Woman killed in hit-and-run on New Kings Road
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A woman was killed in a hit-and-run crash early Sunday morning in front of a nightclub on New Kings Road, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said. The man, who has been living in the area for 22 years, said he walks New Kings Road every day and has seen at least three deadly hit-and-runs. The officer on scene said, unfortunately, New Kings Road has its share of traffic accidents, hit-and-runs and crashes involving pedestrians. Around the corner, on Soutel Drive near New Kings Road, a 34-year-old man was walking Feb. 22 when he was killed in a hit-and-run crash. JSO found a deceased woman on the intersection of New Kings Rd. They are now looking for clues into the suspect's vehicle description. Man charged with DUI manslaughter in New Kings Road crash
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A man was arrested in connection with a deadly crash in March on New Kings Road, according to a state crash report. Police said White was driving a pickup truck with two passengers on New Kings Road, just south of the intersection of Gilchrist Road, about 8 p.m. March 1 when he slammed into a semitruck. The names of both were redacted in the crash report. According to the crash report, the passenger who survived told JSO that White had been drinking, and the officer wrote that White appeared intoxicated. The crash report shows he told JSO he saw the pickup truck coming at him at a high rate of speed and couldnt maneuver to avoid being hit.
