BRUNSWICK, Ga. – The Glynn County Board of Commissioners on Friday filed a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of two laws green-lighting a vote on abolishing the Glynn County Police Department. The laws in question are Senate Bills 38 and 509, which were passed by the Georgia General Assembly in June and signed by Gov. SB 38 allows the state to abolish a county police department if the voters choose to do so, and SB 509 contains the wording of a binding referendum on abolishing the Glynn County Police Department and transferring the agency’s operations and assets to the Glynn County sheriff. According to the county, under SB 38 and SB 509, county assets would be transferred through “an unlawful referendum and election process,” which the county says would be a violation of the Georgia Constitution and state election law. “This lawsuit does not seek to litigate any question related to the merits of abolishing the Glynn County Police Department, or the reasons that motivated the passage and enactment of these bills.

GLYNN COUNTY, Fla. – A Glynn County Police Department investigator -- who happens to be a licensed falconer -- rescued a hawk on Tuesday after it was struck by a vehicle. The police department said the red-tailed hawk was eating a meal when it was injured. Luckily for the large bird, investigator Lowrey’s “unique talents” were put to use and he handled the hawk safely and transported it to a rehabilitation center so it can recover, the department said. If approved, the binding referendum in Senate Bill 509 would automatically abolish the Glynn County Police Department and transfer the functions and assets of the department to the Sheriff of Glynn County. Because the presence of two similar ballot questions could lead to voter confusion, I veto Senate Bill 504.According to the bill, the stronger, binding referendum will be put before voters on Election Day.

A woman died after a shooting over the weekend in Brunswick, and two men are now in custody, authorities said Thursday. Officers were on patrol shortly before 2:30 a.m. Saturday when they heard gunshots coming from a strip mall along Altama Avenue, according to the Glynn County Police Department. Police said they issued arrest warrants charging Jamar and Jeremiah Herrington with aggravated assault. Glynn County commissioners oppose both measures, saying two local Republican lawmakers are trying to help their political ally, Sheriff Neal Jump. Old police body camera videos of run-ins with Ahmaud Arbery have been released by the Glynn County Police Department -- a move that is drawing sharp criticism from attorneys who say the videos are irrelevant and seek to criminalize Arbery. More than two weeks after the two were arrested, the focus has shifted to Arbery past history with law enforcement. The officer searched Arbery for weapons and called for a second police officer to assist him after Arbery curses. Arbery told officers at first he didnt know what television they were talking about and later told them he had a receipt. Latoya Williams Shelton, a Jacksonville defense attorney, believes the videos will likely be prevented from being shown to trial.

According to the human resources office for Glynn County, Rash is still an active employee with the county. The county spokesman did say that stories about the text between their officer and Greg McMichael back in December surprised them.

The photo prompts more questions about what was happening in that Satilla Shores neighborhood before Arbery was shot and killed. The photo shows a text message from an Officer Rash with the Glynn County Police Department telling Larry English to contact Gregory McMichael, his neighbor on Satilla Drive, if English saw any action on his surveillance camera. English’s attorney Beth Graddy told News4Jax this text message dates back to last year. “It appears that Gregory McMichael had been informally ‘deputized’ by the Glynn County Police Department.”Its unclear when McMichael was deputized or why.

According to police, the victim, identified as 37-year-old CBP trainee Wolf Valmond, was struck twice and later died of his injuries. Hector Romero-Hernandez was booked into the Glynn County Detention Center on Monday on charges that include hunting with unlawful weapon, misuse of firearm resulting in serious bodily harm to another and hunting without a license, according to the county sheriff's office. Romero has yet to appear for a preliminary hearing and it's unclear whether he has an attorney. Deer season for archery is open in Georgia but firearms season doesn't begin until Oct. 19, the statement said.

Bobby Lane died after he was accidentally shot in a wooded area near 578 Myers Hill Road, more than two miles west of Interstate 95, police said. GLYNN COUNTY, Ga. - One person died after two vehicles collided and at least one of them caught fire Wednesday afternoon just north of Brunswick, the Glynn County Police Department said. The crash happened just before 2:40 p.m. on King Cotton Road, just east of U.S. 17. When officers arrived on the scene, they discovered a person was still inside one of the vehicles, but they were unable to get the person out because the vehicle was engulfed in flames, according to the Police Department. The child was found on Sea Island, Georgia around 7 a.m. Saturday wearing a blue shirt and diaper. He has sandy blonde hair with blue eyes and was carrying a piece of paper that reads, "Mat." An officer with Sea Island security was able to use sign language and learned the child's name is Mat. Shortly after the Glynn County Police Department notified the media of the lost child, his parents were found and the family is back together.

BRUNSWICK, Ga. - Two teenage brothers were arrested in connection with the killing of a Georgia father of three, the Glynn County Police Department announced Friday. Ethan Bennett, 17, and Everett Bennett, 18, are each charged with one count of murder in the death of Antonio Randolph. Police said they believe Antonio Randolph was killed in the early Tuesday, when officers received a call about gunshots in the area. Antonio Randolph's family said his body was discovered more than eight hours after he was killed. They are without a daddy, and Im out of (a) son," Patricia Randolph, Antonio Randolph's mother, told News4Jax.

BRUNSWICK, Ga. - A man was found shot to death Tuesday morning in the Arco community, the Glynn County Police Department said. When they arrived, police said, they found 35-year-old Glynn County resident Antonio Randolph dead in a yard. They are without a daddy, and Im out of son," said Patricia Randolph, Antonio Randolph's mother. Police said they are looking into whether Antonio Randolph's killing is connected to the shots fired call in the area during the night. Police are offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in Randolph's death.

GLYNN COUNTY, Ga. - A 19-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run accident that left one person injured, according to the Glynn County Police Department. Michael Harris of Saint Simons was taken into custody and charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving injury and causing serious injury by vehicle after a hit-and-run accident Saturday, deputies said. Harris is accused of driving a car that struck 19-year-old pedestrian Rilyn Ellis on Federica Road near Saint Clair Drive on Saint Simons Island, according to deputies. BRUNSWICK, Ga. – A 57-year-old man was found dead inside a home on Jesup Road Friday by officers conducting a welfare check, the Glynn County Police Department said. The body of Antoni Zalewski, of Illinois, was found inside the home about 6:55 p.m., police said. Police on Sunday said the cause of death was a gunshot wound. Police said Zalewski was in the process of remodeling his home and may have been selling or giving away old fixtures and materials. BRUNSWICK, Ga. – An armed robbery occurred late Thursday evening at a Circle K in Brunswick, Georgia, the Glynn County Police Department said. Officers responded about 11:30 p.m. to the convenience store on Community Road. Investigators learned that three people went into the store with a firearm, took an undisclosed amount of money and then left in a small, silver Nissan sedan.
