JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ A 58-year-old man shot early Sunday morning in a unit at a Hoganโs Creek apartment complex was treated at an area hospital and then released. The Jacksonville Sheriffs Office said it responded about 5:45 a.m. to the shooting on West 4th Street at Madison Street and found the man with a single gunshot wound. He was expected to be OK.Police said the shooter, described as a man between 20 and 30 years old, was last seen running from the scene. According to the Sheriffโs Office, the victim and the shooter know each other and police were working to determine the relationship between the two. Photographer arrested during protest files lawsuit, accuses JSO officer of hitting her in the head
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ In a new federal lawsuit, a photographer claims she was arrested, handcuffed and struck in the head by an officer with the Jacksonville Sheriffโs Office during the May 31 protests against police brutality in downtown Jacksonville. This is not the first lawsuit JSO has faced since the arrests of dozens of demonstrators over the course of two days of protests in May. In August, four of the demonstrators arrested during the protests were awarded $100,000 by a federal judge after alleging the sheriffโs office violated their first amendment rights. The Sheriffs Office said โJSO does not comment on litigation.โJSO did not answer our questions asking whether the officer accused of striking the woman was currently or ever under review or investigation. But JSO did say the officer named in the lawsuit, who allegedly struck the woman, is still a current employee of JSO.

Witnesses say car race led to fatal crash on University Boulevard
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ A man died early Saturday morning after driving a Chevy Camaro into a concrete JEA utility pole on University Boulevard South and Barnhill Drive, according to the Jacksonville Sheriffs Office. Witnesses at the scene told police it appeared the driver was racing another car about 1:25 a.m. before losing control and running into the pole. The driver died at the scene. The second car drove off before officers arrived. Traffic Homicide detectives are investigating the crash.

Jacksonville police suspect foul play in womans death
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Investigators with the Jacksonville Sheriffs Office are working to identify a woman who was found dead Wednesday in a home on Carver Circle Northeast. The Sheriffs Office said foul play is suspected in her death. They said officers were directed to the home by the Decantur County Sheriffs Office in Georgia after a man was found dead in a wooded area in the city of Bainbridge. Police in Georgia told JSO the mans death was being investigated as a suicide. They said he used to rent the home where the woman was found dead.
JSO releases bodycam footage from Jacksonville protests in May
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. The Jacksonville Sheriffs Office has released body camera footage from protests during the last weekend in May. Hundreds of protesters gathered in downtown Jacksonville to demand justice for Floyd, and dozens were arrested over two days. Another video shows officers using zip-ties to take several other protesters into custody. One body camera video even shows a man named Chad Hollett being questioned by police shortly after his arrest on the second day of demonstrations. The body camera video of force being used on Hollett hasnt been released.
Records: More Jacksonville evictions filed in last 2 weeks than past 4 months
According to court officials, in Jacksonville, 355 evictions were filed in the last two and a half weeks. Thatโs more evictions filed in two weeks than the last four months of the pandemic. Thirteen evictions were filed in Clay County court since Aug. 24. Jacksonville Legal Aid has created a form for tenants to create their response to the court regarding their evictions summons. In Duval County, tenants who are being evicted because they have been unable to make payments can contact the county court judge and request the execution of the eviction to be halted.
Arrest made in January 2019 shooting death of bicyclist
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. An arrest has been made in connection with the fatal shooting of a bicyclist in January 2019, according to the Jacksonville Sheriffs Office. Janera Smith, 22, was arrested Friday on a charge of accessory after the fact, an arrest report shows. On Jan. 31, 2019, Damon Rothermel, 50, was shot and killed while riding his bicycle on Emerson Street east of St. Augustine Road. Police said he appeared to have been hit by a stray slug from a shootout between people in two cars. Relatives said Rothermel, a Navy veteran, had just celebrated his 50th birthday the day before the shooting.
Jacksonville police arrest 2 in crackdown on illegal nightclub
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. More than 100 people were found inside an underground nightclub when the Jacksonville Sheriffs Office raided the off-the-books operation near Goodbys Creek over the weekend. The early morning crackdown resulted in two arrests and a cease-and-desist order for those operating what police are calling an illegal nightclub, according to a booking report for one of the arrestees. Once they gained entry, police found 105 people inside the business, according to the report. Police noted the front door was blocked by a couch and the rear door was being used as an entrance. The fire marshal issued six civil citations to Jimenez along with a cease-and-desist order.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Two men have been arrested in a drive-by shooting that sent a woman to the hospital with critical injuries. According to an arrest report from the Jacksonville Sheriffs Office, Jicobee Wilson, 22, is charged with attempted murder and possession of a firearm by delinquent juvenile. Jicobee WilsonWilson was arrested at an apartment complex on the Westside. The arrest report states that Jessie Liptrot, 23, was arrested on charges of attempted murder and carrying a concealed weapon. The shooting happened Aug. 8 on Songbird Lane.

A spokesperson for Jacksonville Sheriffs Office said it happened before 10:15 Monday night. Police responded to the Vista Landing Apartment Complex after shot spotters picked up nearby gunfire. When they arrived at the complex, officers found a man who had died at the back of the complex, but its not clear if the man was found outside or inside of a unit. Officers preparing for a shift change at the substation heard the shots around 1:30 a.m. and found a car stopped in the road at the Arlington intersection. Four others who were inside the car that was stopped on Beach Boulevard were taken into custody to be interviewed by detectives. They said it was clear the car on Atlantic Boulevard was targeted because it was shot about a dozen times. By 6 a.m., the bullet-riddled car on Atlantic Boulevard had been towed away and all lanes had reopened. The second scene on Beach Boulevard at Cortez Road cleared about 90 minutes later.
One person hurt after semi truck overturns on exit ramp
The Jacksonville Sheriffs Office says a semi truck overturned on the exit ramp from State Road 9B to I-95. Two traffic lanes have been blocked in the incident. The Florida Highway Patrol says at least one person was hurt in the crash, but have not said what caused it. JSO has yet to say when the road will reopen. Motorists driving through that area are urged to use caution.
Police: Girl shot, killed in Jacksonville Heights was 14 years old
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. A girl who was killed in a double shooting early Saturday morning in the Jacksonville Heights area was 14 years old, according to Jacksonville Sheriffs Office records. The Sheriffs Office said the incident happened around 1:10 a.m. on Renault Drive near Hillman Drive, off 103rd Street, directly across from Jacksonville Heights Elementary. Officers said that when they arrived, they found two victims the teenage girl and a man with gunshot wounds. The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department said the girl died at the scene, despite attempts to save her life. According to News4Jax records, 383 people have been shot so far this year in Jacksonville nearing the 389 people shot in all of 2019.
Downed power line causes traffic problems on Lem Turner Road
The Jacksonville Sheriffs Office says a downed power line has blocked all lanes of traffic on Lem Turner Road between Braddock and Terrell Roads. Officials say a tree was also brought down across the roadway, with the power line. JSO believes all lanes in that area will be closed for several hours.

Man arrested, accused of running chop shop in Jacksonville
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. During the course of a four-day investigation into an auto theft ring, more than 10 vehicles were recovered and several people were taken into custody, according to a report from the Jacksonville Sheriffs Office. The report states that detectives were investigating the thefts of more than 15 cars from auctions, dealers and shops along New Kings Road. Stephen Harrison, 49, was arrested and charged with five counts of auto theft and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. According to the report, three stolen vehicles were found on the property, which had been reported stolen from Americas Auto Auction Jacksonville on New Kings Road. Investigators determined four other vehicles on the property may also have been stolen but unreported.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ Despite the fact that the Republican National Convention moved to Jacksonville earlier this summer never took place here, the city still spent thousands of dollars on planning. Auditors determined that more than $153,602.68 was spent on planning the event -- with 45% that on overtime pay to Jacksonville Sheriffโs Office employees and another 45% to an outside firm hired to help secure federal grants. The remaining 10% of the money went to overtime to Jacksonville Fire-Rescue and other city employees. In late July, President Donal Trump canceled the Jacksonville events due to coronavirus cases surging locally and across Florida. Mayor Lenny Curry stated numerous times that Jacksonville would not be on the hook for any costs.
Police found mother and child reported missing
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. The Jacksonville Sheriffs Office located a 22-year-old and her baby. A family member told JSO the mother and child were missing from their home on Brannon Avenue on the Westside. Due to the circumstances involved, the Sheriffs Office believes she and her child may have been in danger. A spokesperson for JSO didnt say what the circumstances were, but they were looking for a 32-year-old who lived with the mother and child. Off-duty JSO officer intervenes during bloody machete attack in Yulee
YULEE, Fla. An off-duty officer with the Jacksonville Sheriffs Office jumped in to help arrest a suspect Tuesday in what has been described as a bloody altercation involving a machete in Yulee. According to a Nassau County Sheriffs Office arrest report obtained by News4Jax, the incident happened at a Yulee home Tuesday night. While en route to the disturbance call, a Nassau County deputy was told that a juvenile victim had been struck with a machete. The report states that before the deputy arrived at the home, off-duty JSO officer S.E. Officer Johnson also saw Natrillo chasing the alleged victim and took Natrillo into custody until the Nassau deputy could arrive on the scene.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ A woman missing since Monday night was found safe Tuesday, the Jacksonville Sheriffโs Office said. The woman had last been seen leaving her home to go for a bicycle ride and never came home. Nelson issues new policy on body camera footage in police shootings
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Saying that swift and certain public release of body-camera footage is in the publics best interest, State Attorney Melissa Nelson on Tuesday announced changes to the policies involving videos of police shootings. Nelson said the State Attorneys Office for Duval Clay and Nassau counties will now approve the release of footage from police shootings within 30 days unless the state believes it will hinder a case. I think its a good policy, I think its thoughtful, I think its well researched, Nelson told News4Jax. Im really proud of the work of the assistant state attorneys in the office, whove been working really diligently on putting it together. The release of body camera footage has been a sore spot between the Jacksonville Sheriffs Office and the State Attorneys Office since some JSO officers starting wearing the cameras at the end of 2018.

Man shot during argument dies at hospital
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ An argument Saturday evening in a Northwest Jacksonville neighborhood ended with at least one gunshot and a man dead, according to police. He was taken to a hospital by Jacksonville Fire-Rescue, where he pronounced dead. Jacksonville Sheriffโs Office homicide investigators said the unidentified man who shot the victim drove away in a black car. According to News4Jax records, this was the 122nd homicide of the year in Duval County -- 100 of those ruled murders. There have been 374 people shot in Jacksonville this year -- including five in less than eight hours over the weekend.
14 Jacksonville police officers cleared in 9 shootings

When Ervie raised the knife, investigators said, Officer B.L. According to investigators, officers called that number to set up another meet, and one of the suspects pulled a gun. Investigators said Baker stabbed Meckling in the arm with a butcher knife before the officers shot her. Now that the officers have been cleared, the Jacksonville Sheriffs Offices Response to Resistance Board will determine if the shootings were within departmental guidelines for the use of deadly force.

About 200 activists and supporters gathered Saturday afternoon in the large grass field near the Jacksonville Sheriffs Office headquarters to protest racial injustice and demand police reform. Organizers said their demands cover concerns about law enforcement and the criminal justice system as well as racial and economic issues. The protest was a drive-in rally to allow for social distancing, and hundreds of protesters, most wearing masks, gathered to voice their concerns. The drive-in protest was spearheaded by the JCAC and the Northside Coalition. Man killed in Wednesdays becomes Jacksonvilles 100th murder victim of 2020
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Police have ruled the shooting death of a 52-year-old man in a Northside home before dawn Wednesday a murder. By policy, the Jacksonville Sheriffs Office does not identify victims of a homicide -- anyone who killed by another person -- or murder -- someone killed with intent. According to News4Jax records, Wednesdays victim was the 100th person murdered in Jacksonville so far this year -- the earliest in any year in the last two decades the city has reached this grim milestone. In less than nine months of 2020, there have been 121 homicides in Jacksonville this year, according to News4Jax data. As of Wednesday, JSO said the most recent murder was under investigation and police had not developed any suspect information.
Police: Accomplice of robber killed charged with murder
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Six weeks after 22-year-old Malik Sykes was shot and killed by the person he was trying to rob at a convenience store, the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force arrested a man police believed was Sykess accomplice that day. The Jacksonville Sheriffs Office said Shantez Forbes, 21, was arrested Wednesday on charges of felony murder, attempted robbery, shooting missiles and carrying a concealed firearm. Under Florida law, Forbes is charged with murder because Sykes death took place during the commission of a felony: attempted armed robbery. The State Attorneys Office has a long history of filing murder charges in such cases.

ShotSpotter is a gunshot detection system thats used in various locations throughout the city. Molina said the victim, who was not identified, was shot several times. Former Jacksonville officer accused of criminal sexual conduct with child appears in court
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. A former officer with the Jacksonville Sheriffs Office who has been accused of criminal sexual conduct with a child appeared in court Wednesday morning. David Gedert, 31, is charged with two counts of criminal sexual conduct with a child under age 13 on a warrant out of Kalamazoo County stemming from an incident that allegedly happened six years ago. According to Undersheriff Pat Ivey, Officer David Gedert has been fired from the Sheriffs Office. News4Jax crime and safety expert Ken Jefferson, who used to be an officer at JSO, said officers are required to complete extensive background checks. Gedert is the fifth member of the Sheriffs Office to be arrested in 2020.
Documents: 99 cold case victim was under FBI investigation

The State Attorneys Office released documents Wednesday shedding new light on the investigation into a retired Jacksonville detective who is charged with murder in the 1999 stabbing death of a business owner. The Jacksonville Sheriffs Office says Saad Kawaf was stabbed to death in his garage at his Deerwood home. William Baer, a retired detective of the Sheriffs Office, is charged with second-degree murder and other charges to which hes pleaded not guilty. According to investigators, Baer was assigned to do surveillance at the bank where Kawaf was making the deposits, but on the day Baer sat on the bank, Kawaf didnt appear. Baer was with the Sheriffs Office for 27 years, joining in 1975 and retiring in 2002.
Investigators search for 2 men who dropped off 69-year-old crash victim at hospital
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. On Saturday night, the Jacksonville Sheriffs Office said two men dropped off a 69-year-old woman believed to be the victim of a car crash. After the woman died, investigators are now looking for the men who left without giving any information about what happened. New policy on police bodycam video to be put in place soon in Jacksonville

There have been meetings between JSO, the state attorney and groups like the Northside Coalition to speed up the process of releasing body camera footage. During Mondayโs meeting, City Council member Ron Salem told the committee a new policy is coming very soon. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Jacksonvilles animal control office is looking into a social media post involving alleged acts of animal cruelty. The Jacksonville Sheriffs Office told News4Jax it forwarded the information to animal control officers. Videos, which News4Jax has chosen not to show on air or online, were posted on Instagram. News4Jax has also learned through tips that the person who posted that video may have also posted images of cats being set on fire. Jacksonville police told News4Jax they received a complaint about that video and then alerted animal control.
Man shot near Phoenix neighborhood
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. The Jacksonville Sheriffs Office says a 29-year-old man was shot multiple times in the parking lot of the Sanctuary Walk apartment complex, located near the Phoenix neighborhood in Jacksonvilles northside. JSO says at least two male suspects were involved in the shooting, but believe there could be more suspects. JSO says there was no argument or communication between the individuals, and that the shots were random. Neighbors in the complex told News4JAX reporter, Marilyn Parker that they heard what sounded like 15 to 20 shots. Man shot and killed outside Southside apartments
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ Police are searching for a gunman after a man was shot and killed late Saturday night outside of an apartment complex on the cityโs Southside, the Jacksonville Sheriffโs Office said. After receiving at least four 911 calls about a shooting just before 11:30 p.m., the Sheriffโs Office said, police found a man dead outside of the Bennett Creek Apartments on Bennett Creek Drive near Salisbury Road at Bowden Road. Police said the man had been shot at least once. The Sheriffโs Office said it believes the shooter fled from the scene but it has no information about that person at this time. According to investigators, the shooting appears to have stemmed from an argument that took place at a nearby gas station. Family hopeful boy shot while playing video games will walk again
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. The aunt of 12-year-old who was paralyzed after he was struck by a bullet while playing video games told News4Jax on Friday that the boy is on a long road to recovery. According to a report from the Jacksonville Sheriffs Office, shots were fired at the home on College Circle South, and the boy was struck Aug. 1 while lying in bed. Briana Davis, the 12-year-olds aunt, identified the boy as Darrielle Rucker, and she told News4Jax he should be preparing for the seventh grade. Its just terrifying, Davis said. Man injured at scene of womans stabbing death charged with her murder
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Five days after a woman stabbed to death inside a San Pablo Road apartment, Jacksonville police have charged a man taken from the scene to the hospital with injuries with murder. People at the Coquina Bay Apartments who heard the woman screaming called the Jacksonville Sheriffs Office just after 5 p.m. Saturday. Officers said they forced their way into the apartment and found both the man and woman suffering from stab wounds. The woman, who police will not identify, died at the scene. Nabil Abdel-Majid, 49, who police have now charged with second-degree murder, was taken to a local hospital.

Jacksonville police: 15-year-old among 3 injured in shooting at Picketville park
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Three people, including a 15-year-old, were injured in a shooting Sunday afternoon at a park in the Picketville neighborhood, the Jacksonville Sheriffs Office said. Officers responded about 12:15 p.m. to the shooting at the J. Gardner Sams Memorial Park on Richardson Road, off of New Kings Road. Police said they saw multiple people leaving the park and then they made their way to the basketball courts, where they found three people between the ages of 15 and 38 with gunshot wounds to their lower bodies. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. A man was hit by a vehicle just after 5 a.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Philips Highway and Emerson Street, the Jacksonville Sheriffs Office said. The man was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. Police did not release the mans age and said its unclear if he was walking in the road or on the sidewalk. Police: Woman shot during dispute at store dies
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. A 36-year-old woman who was shot during what investigators described as a physical dispute has died from her injuries, according to the Jacksonville Sheriffs Office. The woman who died was not named. A second woman was taken into custody following the altercation Sunday afternoon at a Safeco Discount Store in the Lake Forest neighborhood. A spokesperson for Jacksonville Sheriffโs Office said the 36-year-old is the babyโs father. According to police, Corey Sims left a residence with his son and is refusing to return with him. Noah Sims was last seen wearing a light blue polo short, coral, casual shorts, and white sneakers.

Officers were called to College Circle South on Saturday after learning of a reported shooting. According to an updated report from police, at least one shot was fired into a home, and a boy was wounded. JSO searching for missing 74-year-old man
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. The Jacksonville Sheriffs Office is searching for Jerry Wren, 74, who was last seen Sunday morning in the area of Electra Drive South. JSO said Wren is diagnosed with dementia. Wren is described as being 5 feet, 11 inches tall, weighing 160 pounds and having brown eyes and gray hair. He was reportedly wearing gray sweatpants and an unknown color tank top. Jacksonville police: Woman shot during dispute at store
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. A woman was taken into custody after another woman was shot and seriously injured during a dispute Sunday afternoon at a store in the Lake Forest neighborhood, according to the Jacksonville Sheriffs Office. Officers said they responded about 12:20 p.m. to a shooting at Safeco Discount Store on Bunker Hill Boulevard. Based on what police learned from witnesses, according to the Sheriffs Office, it appears two female customers were involved in a physical dispute, and during the altercation, one of the women shot the other woman in the leg. The shooter remained at the scene and was taken into custody, according to the Sheriffs Office. The Sheriffs Office said it was not immediately known whether the dispute began in the store or before that.
2 found shot in College Gardens neighborhood
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Two people with gunshot wounds were found Saturday evening in the College Gardens neighborhood, the Jacksonville Sheriffs Office said. Officers responded around 11 p.m. to a reported shooting on College Circle South. Upon arrival, responding officers located two individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. The Sheriffs Office does not have any suspect information at this time. Officers find shooting victim at Edgewood Avenue gas station
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. A person who had been shot was found early Sunday morning at a gas station on Edgewood Avenue North, the Jacksonville Sheriffs Office said. Officers said they responded around 4:25 a.m. to a reported shooting at the Texaco gas station on Edgewood Avenue North. Responding officers found a single victim suffering from a gunshot wound at that location. Primary investigation led police to belive that the victim was shot at a seperate location before driving his truck to the gas station, according to the Sheriffs Office. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Jacksonville police asked for the communitys help Saturday to find a missing 61-year-old man who has been experiencing memory issues. The Jacksonville Sheriffs Office said David Brown was last seen around 6:30 a.m. Friday in the area of Waterville Road. Police said they just want to find him to make sure hes OK.Brown is described as a white man with blue eyes and gray hair, 6 feet, 2 inches tall and weighing 190 pounds. He is believed to be driving a 2007 White Dodge Ram bearing Florida tag 02GGA. JSO identifies parents of child found on Emerson

Police: 2 Women shot, hospitalized in rolling shootout
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Two women were wounded Friday night after they got into a shootout with another person while behind the wheel of a car in the Hogans Creek neighborhood, according to the Jacksonville Sheriffs Office. Short, with the Sheriffs Office, officers were called to Hart Street in reference to a ShotSpotter report of shots fired in the area. Moments later, they were called to West 7th Street, where they found two women who had been shot. It is believed that the females were engaged in some sort of rolling shootout with an individual in a pickup truck, Short said. Friends identify man killed in domestic-related shooting in Mandarin
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Friends have identified the man who was killed early Tuesday morning in Mandarin in what police described as a domestic-related shooting. Christopher Bowman, 47, had recently moved to Jacksonville from Virginia, according to friends. The Jacksonville Sheriffs Office said it received several 911 calls around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday about a shooting at a home on Sheldrake Drive, just south of Loretto Road. Responding officers found a man, who friends identified as Bowman, dead inside the home with at least one gunshot wound. Neighbors said Bowmans girlfriend does not appear to have returned to the home since the shooting.
